Gmail chat question

Hi, I've been using gmail for a while now but the gmail chat function does not appear to be activated. Perhaps I deselected it somehow. Does anyone know how I can activate this function? Thanks for your help!

this happened to me i fixed it by changing my language to English (U.S). instead of English (U.K).

I am sure they will improve it over time, but right now it is very poor compared to the other chat programs. Stick with the various Messengers, ICQ etc., at least until Google get something worthy of these.
