Possible dead 7800gtx card

I built a system recently with the following specs ,

    AMD X2 3800 processor
    1 GB ram
    Epox nforce 4 SLI motherboard

    POV 7800GTX graphics ,
    Creative audigy 2 soundcard
    5.1 speaker system
Samsung 930BX 19 inch LCD monitor 4 ms

Anyway , the system was working fine for a while , I had some issues with game drop outs and hangs due to the X2 processor ( posted about this before ) but installed a patch for this and all worked well.

I turned the system on the other day and now there is no video output , the rest of the system seems to work OK as you can hear Win XP finish the boot up and play the welcome jingle , theres just no output on the screen , the monitor displays a message saying there is no input.

I have plugged the monitor into a different PC and it works fine. I have tried re seating the graphics card , still nothing !!. Has anyone had a similar problem?

Is the graphics card dead ? Its an unusual problem as usually when a graphics card dies you get a beep code right ? In this case everything else seems to be working , just no video display !!

    Any suggestions anyone ?

Yeah you usually get a beep code warning of some kind though it may depend on the motherboard.

Did you try plugging in a different power cable from the PSU to the graphics card and don't daisy chain the cable to any other device.

Can you test the graphics card in another PC as well ?

    Hi,

Are you using the DVi - VGA adaptor ? If you are I would try the 2nd /spare adapter - maybe trying it in the 2nd video output on the back of the card.

Also might be worth trying a different pci-e power cable and if its still dead it would be time to try it on a different system/call warranty support for a replacement.

    Good luck

there seems to be a serious issue with the nvidia drivers.. From what I've found it seems to be that the driver gets corrupted and thus goes blank after loading it..
try rebooting in safe mode..uninstalling and then reinstalling the forceware drivers..this did it for me..

and this affected me in sli 6800/7800 and single gpu configs..it was only til i did the above that it seems to resolve issue..

Not likely to affect it when booting.

Is the fan on the graphics card spinning?

And no, you'll only get a beep code if the interface side of the graphics card is the problem.

Try hooking it up to your TV, it might be the DVI driver thats blown.

Thanks for the replies everyone , Im off shift for the next few days and will try some of the above ,

In answer to some of the questions ,

Yes the fan on the board is spinning ,

I have tried both outputs on the card , the same result from both , ( no joy )
There are also two inputs on the monitor , one for DVI and one VGA , I have tried both inputs and nothing.

Anyway , I will try the power options mentioned above , but I doubt thats it , the unit has a 500W supply and there is nothing else on the two power connectors connected to the card.

    Looks like its RMA time.

OK , some more information on the above , managed to get a hold of a cheap PCIe 16x card , its a radeon X300 , hardly a replacement but I installed it and the PC is now up and running , So the POV 7800GTX is definitely a goner , I have requested an RMA ,

Heres a question , have a look at the two photos below , on of em shows the card and the other shows the pins along the bottom , near the end one of the pins is only half the length of the rest !!

Can anyone tell me if this is normal , or is this maybe the problem with the card , in which case should I be looking in my PC for a piece of broken off pin ?

    Yeah, that don't look good.
Looks like the gold pad is ripped off part of the way.
Good news is its fixable though.

No that's normal do a Google image search for 7800GTX and you will see they all have that.

Some supporting component on the card could have just given out which stopped it working it's unlikely the GPU suddenly just died on it's own.
