I wish to transfer files between a laptop and a PC - is it possible to do this by just using some sort of USB system or what would I need?

    What size are the files?
You can connect using a Xover cable, you'll get one in peats or maplins, you'll need to configure both machine onto the same workgroup and then change the Hosts file in Windows\system32\drivers\etc.
You could use any USB media( External Harddrive, MP3 player, Digital Camera) are a temperary bridge

the files would be reasonably big - say up to 100 - 400 MB. I reasile that i could put them on cd or memory stick etc , but i am looking for some way to transfer them directly?

Crossover cable or two wireless cards in ad-hoc mode is prob easiest.

With crossover cable, set the ip address of laptop to 192.168.1.1 say and the PC as 192.168.1.2. Make sure they are in the same workgroup (usually WORKGROUP or MSHOME). Then just create a shared folder on one machine and drag and drop files from the other machine to this shared folder.

hey there, you said how to do it with cables, how do you connect two computers via wireless?
My desktop doesnt have a wireless card, however it has a wireless internet router. is it possible to do it through this?? Also, if i have two laptops both wireless, is it possible to transfer files?

    thanks

I use this for transferring stuff between my lappie & PC. I mainly do small stuff though, not sure how it would go with the sizes you're talking about. Would imagine it should still work I guess, but will prolly be rather slow.

Same as using cables. Just set the two cards up in ad hoc mode and not infrastructure mode. I usually do this by configuring one card as an ad hoc profile and then searching for it on the second machine. A read of your manual for your wireless card will give you instuctions on how to use ad hoc mode. Then follow guide above.

If desktop is connected to router, and laptop is connected to the same router wirelessly then yes you can create a shared folder on one and transfer files from /to it on the other machine.
