Sky MultiRoom Advice

Hi folks, I am looking for some advice...

I ordered Sky Multiroom recently, when the engineer came out I was told that it wasn't possible as they would not install through partitions etc. So I made do with a single Sky installation.

I now want to upgrade to multiroom as I will be renting out rooms and want to make sure that each room has it's own seperate connection.

I will need 3 extra connections on top of the existing one.
I was going to get a friend (electrician) to upgrade the LNB to 4 way and get him to coax three cables into the attic and drop them to the appropriate TV points, buy 3 Sky Boxes and then ring Sky to receive the cards....

Is there a problem with doing this or has anybody any advice as to the easiest process to get multiroom setup.....any advice would be greatly appreciated....also a pointer to where to get LNB and addtional boxes would help....thanx

Unfortunately you cannot get the gear discounted unless you order direct from skyor a sky agent. Not really sure why the guys would not install for you , a partition is not really a big obstacle. Your best bet would be to go to an indepenedent that does multiroom.

You don't want an Electrician. They are GREAT for power wiring, but twenty years experience tells me get a specialist for Video, Alarms, P.A., TV or Satellite cables. The working practices and knowledge is a lot different.

By same token there are few TV/Satellite folk I would trust to wire a fuse box and ring main :)

If you get the coax and phonelines professionally installed then order the multiroom from Sky and the installer only has to connect up.

Run 2 x CAT5e to each area from a central point that you run a phone cable to. Run unbroken CT120 coax from Dish to each point.

Use a dual RJ45 outlet in each room. One socket can be for phone (a phone jack actually fits and uses different pairs to network anyway). And the other optionally later for networking.

It costs nearly the same to run 2 cables as one.

    Thanx for the info....

The reason given by the engineer was that Sky will not support breakdowns if they had to chase cables etc through the partitions.....

I have wireless broadband running in the place....so didn't want the hassle of running Cat5 but I may as well......was gonna opt for the wireless phone line option, but don't know how well it works.

22Mbp/s wireless shared by 4 people may be slower than broadband :) You would only get about 1 or 2Mbps per person.

With a cheap Switch and Ethernet (maybe already built in your router/Wireless base, the internal LAN will go at 100Mbps full duplex . Wireless takes turns to talk and listen.
