I was called out to fix this guys Broadband the other night, could ping eircom could ping the router, but couldnt surf. Was recking my head couldnt figure out the problem then nor could eircom so after about an hour of being on to tech support, during which Ì ate your man for laughing at the fact I was trying to get Broadband working on a win 98 machine,
    a) it wasnt my machine
    b) windows 98 meets broadband requirements
    c) it had worked for months previous
    d) i hate smart arses in tech support when I am trying to get a job done
    e) I had had a very long day

After explaining all this he awknowledged his rudeness and said he wasnt having a great day either, and apoligised.....

Anyway after trying every thing he checked the account and found the DSL account had been disabled, this is after i removed all of norton and pricked about with every concievable network setting.

The guy owned a 'B&B and had been sent a wireless router to connect up to eircom as part of some tourism deal, he didnt want it and had told the Chamber of commerce this yet they sent it, but he didnt open it. So I opened it to find a letter stating your broadband will switch over to hotspot on the 22nd of March after which please use your new hotspot router as your old one will no longer work.

I rang the guy back and explained this and he again apoligised and said it should have been noted on the account and wasnt.

All that trouble and wasted time.....which i charged for to do something as simple as switch over a router, that i wasnt even told exsisted!!!

Thats a misserable thing to happen, you fell so cheated. Ever notice that the eircom engineers that come out to the house to do the braodband setup leave the wireless connection on and open! Seen it in two houses. They had no need of the wireless and didn't realease it was there. A checkbox less later and router restart and all is well in the world.

    Tip:

If your trouble shooting connection problems always try it on a different machine then the one your trying to fix.

Understandable tip, but when your someones home and dont have a laptop to carry with you its not always possible.

Another PC would not have done me any good in this instance only prove that the problem was at eircoms end which I said all along.

Of course it would, you'd have 100 % elimated the guys PC, stopping Tech support getting you to jump through hoops doing software checks. A spare router should be brought when trouble shooting connection faults aswell. Thus narrowing the fault at the line or on eircoms side. Couple of hours saved.

Eircom admitted they were at fault, I could ping both the router and eircom.net as I already stated, the error was due to the fact that eircom had disabled the customers account, and they admit that. No amount of trouble shooting would have concluded that.

Funny u should pick up on pointing the finger at me for this your the only one that did and I have discussed it with many network engineers during the week.
