If you wanna skip the long story of exactly what went wrong skip to quoted part for condensed version

Sooo i've been overusing my computer (heh what a surprise:rolleyes: )

having it in some state of 'on' constantly but recently something has gone wrong.

It started 2 nights ago (in the middle of an assignment) where the screen would switch to sleep mode as it normally does if the computer was off, but the computer was still running along as if it was on.

So after a few attempts to get it going again with some success that it comes on for a few minutes when i restart the computer then dies again, i come to the conclusion that my monitor has died, and i quickly pop down and borrow my absent housemates monitor just so i can finish this essay.

Pop in new monitor reboot computer, everything is fine for about 20 minutes when the problem happens again. So its not the monitor (confirmed by having music playing when the monitor goes into sleep and the music stops with it (which it shouldnt if computer was still running)

So my Computer is randomly dieing every now and then. Second theory is that i have been overusing it and it has burned some part of itself out temporarly (its been on consistanly for almost a week now)

so i turn it off for rest of night and finish essay on a friends laptop.

Next day everything seems fine, computer is working again to allow me to get a few hours of gaming in.

    THen it happens again.

So i open it up to see inside. The main fan seems to be perfectly fine, as is the one on my motherboard. So i check the hard drives...they're both boiling hot. Could my hard drives be getting too hot? (i do a system check (via Belarc) and i'm told they are both fine. Which leaves only my graphics card (A Radeon 9600)

Now a few more attempts at turning it on and off, result in varied results. IF its something overheating then the length of time it takes to overheat should be somewhat comparible to amount of time i let the computer cool down, but sometimes it clicks off immeaditly despite being left off for best of 3 hours and other times (like now) despite being on for a long period of time, its not turning itself off.

    So to recap
Problem: Computer is turning itself off, while processor and fans continue to run, its connection to the monitor ceases and windows etc are shut off.

Specs: pentium 4 2.0 ghz, 756 ram, Atlantis Radeon 9600 graphics card.

previous problems: 2 weeks refused to run windows cause too much voltage in monitor, disabled excess voltage problem fixed (i think).

I'm pretty sure something in hardware has gone balls up, what i was hoping is if someone can point me in the direction of what it could be. My guess at the moment is the fan on my graphics card has bolloxed up (cant see it from here.) But i am not very tech savy and it could be something i am ignoring completely, so any help would be great cheers.
