There's a few of us from boards here playing a game. One slooooow the other somewhat speedier. The email games while good, do take a bit of time for the turns to pass around. I had a look at the bitboss server a good while back and when I looked it was pretty ropey, had no linux support (duh) and was sir crashalot.

Multiplayer is the only way to go tbh, it is balanced and peoples moves make sense.

I like the slooooow PBEM games more as they makes you consider all your options while you wait for your turn, I remember spending 2 hours working out ratios of food and production to see the best long term outcome for my city, it gets pretty involving.

ha ha i'm nowhere near that caught up. though i find that you start a game at like 11am and then suddenly its 1 in the morning and you wonder where the day went.

anyone tried out any decent mods? seeing as the whole xml/python strategy was supposed to promote active modding i haven't found much that tickles my fancy so to speak

Never heard of any decent mods, but if you want a fun game I suggest you post a request for some players for a PBEM, its the only way to go....

i might just do that, though i'm a relative newcomer to multi-player Civ, so i'll more than likely get me ass kicked. but sure thats the fun!

Bit of a thread hijcak : How much of a rip off is Civ4?

I was well pissed off with civ3. We were promised multiplayer after it's release so I went and paid full price thinking it'd be free, like Alpha Centauri. I was apalled when they released it as an expansion pack (Play the World). I went and paid full price for PTW as well even though I was fuming but then I got a job so I didn't have time to play it. By the time I had a some free time to try and join a multiplayer game another expansion pack (Conquests) had come out and nobody was playing PTW any more. ****ed if I was going to buy it though.

I'm thinking of buying Civ4 the next time it drops in price, but I don't want to find out I need to shell out more before I can play.

You wouldn't think a few quid would bother me so much - I piss more than that up against the wall every weekend....

    zero, no rip off here

no its not like that at all. has all the functions that we thought we'd get with 3. there is an expansion pack on the way, but is new civs and scenarios from what i've read. looks good from early views

    Blitz,

The lobby system (curse you gamespy) and netcode for civ4 are absolutely terrible. Luckily this is more than made up for by the fact the game itself simply rocks in multiplayer. Heartily recommended, although be warned the lobby system will irritate you.

I'm playing in the "fast" PBEM game, it's ripping along at about 4/5 turns a week. great fun.

Civ4 is a great game, took me a while to deprogram myself after civ3 (early expansion is expensive, military is initially confusing) But now I'm enthralled.

it took me nearly 35 mins to get a game going in that lobby on Sat night. Woeful..Then the laggin between me and some short ass in mexico was horrible lol

PBEM seems to be the way to go. wats the etiquette on turn length?

Its pretty varied, It can hop between a day and a week for a turn.

I spent a total of 87 quid but I ended up with two copies due to retards in play.com's returns dept.

sold one to mate for 30 + Beer. good deal.
