    Hi Guys

Don't think too many will know me here i read this forum quite a bit but rarely post. I have found it of great help with my game in general.

Mostly i would have been a home game player but have started to play higher stake live games recently and have been doing ok from them so far.

I have played a bit online but due to limited internet access and not really having enough time its not something i get a chance to do quite often.

Fortunately that situation is going to change in the coming month and hopefully i will be able to play alot more online.

So what if you could start all over again .....................

What mistakes did you make that you wish you could change or things you would have done differently ?

Stuff like a i hear alot about different internet programs to use for example poker tracker ....... How will this help me ? What other programs could help me ?

What is all this rakeback stuff about ? Were are the best value tornaments online ?

So really what i am asking is with all the knowledge and experience you now have over the time you have been playing what advice would you give to a player starting out for the first time ?

I know this is a fairly extensive question but i know the advice i could get from you guys would be invaluable to me starting out for the first time.

    Thanks
    OPR

Pokertracker is very valuable if you play alot of cash games, handy for tournaments too but not all online poker sites support tournament stats, and you also have to play alot of STTs to get meaningful information.
It's handy for seeing mistakes in your cash games play, e.g. you can see if you are making money with hands like 88-TT from early positions.

See the charter for your rakeback question.

Best advice I'd give you for online play is Bankroll management. If you can afford to keep depositing with your credit card when you go broke then this doesn't matter too much.
Depending on what games you play most (NL hold'em cash games/Omaha cash/holde'm STTs/MTTs) you should have a certain amount of buy-ins for each level. Search the poker forum for threads on bankroll. Also read Musician's stickied thread at the top of the forum, plenty of info on reading material and being a beginner.

I wish i'd dicovered this site earlier than I did - I remember thinking that I understood the game fairly well, then reading a few threads on this site and not being able to follow more than about 10% (mainly HectorJelly threads it has to be said !). Him, Nicky, Ste05, buzzer and many others forced me to do some serious thinking about, well, nearly everything. Thank you to all.

I wished I'd read Harringtons first book earlier than I did, some very simple concepts read and reread on the bus every morning for a month totally tranformed what I was doing.

I wish I hadnt seen so much 'edited' poker on TV - it gave me the false idea that 90% of hands are 'action' hands.

Basically i'd advise any new player to read as much as they can, to always be open to new concepts, to understand the idea of a bankroll, not to panic during bad runs, the importance of not going on tilt.

Maybe be a bit selective what site you start out on. I'd guess that there's a trend for people to stick with the first site they signup/deposit on. You can get great value by switching between sites to take advantage of good offers and soft games.

Neteller lets you withdraw money easily and quickly to switch your bankroll between sites. Much easier than cashing out cheques or to your credit card and then redepositing to a new site.
Setting up a Neteller account is a little tricky, but costs nothing and is a godsend if you want to cashout straight to your bank account or move money around. And it's as secure as an online "wallet" can be.

    Thanks Guys

Sorry i removed my last post cause didn't think i made the point very well.

That is the kind of stuff i mean. Like when i was saying " What is rake back ? " I only found out about this a month ago and even with my small amount of play my reaction was " DAM I WISH I HAD KNOW ABOUT THAT"

Thats like a personal experience i had that i wished i had known about.

Or as you say you wish you had read harrigtons first poker books. Its all the stuff down the line you went ah if only i had know about this earlier !!!
The biggest one for me being as already said that i didn't find this board earlier ;)

Thanks, lafortezza number one on my list of things to do so far is set up a netteller account !

Rake back is important getting 25%+ of your rake paid into your account can turn a losing player into a winning player.

Tilt control and bankroll management as laforezza are vital it is far easier to tilt like a mofo online than in a live game when you have to worry about looking like a donkey.

Dont play intoxicated, particularly dont play 150/300 limit intoxicated this particular lesson is the one I wish I had learned earlier lol.

Play within your means, a bad day should sting you financially but have no bearing on your living expenses.

If you are going to play cash games poker tracker is the best investment you can make

From my limited experience of online i have found this already. In an online game i find myself calling hands i would never call in a live game.

Does this come self control come with experience or are thier any things you can suggest to help with this ?

I have post its all over my pc, they read things like

Dont try to take calling stations off their hands.

Dont call significant river bets with 2nd pair.

Dont go broke with two pair.

    Dont 3 bet tt jj.

    etc etc

I know all of this stuff but I convince myself to do it if I dont have it written down.
