Dvd writer cannot detect cd's

    hi guys...

I have a Sony DVDRW DW-Q28A. I was burning an audio cd using nero 7 yesterday and after it got to 100%, it just hanged. I thought well... another coaster for me, then tried to cancel the burn & close nero & restarted the computer.

After restarting, the dvd writer did not recognise the cd, tried to put in other cd's still the same. Put in dvd's ok, no problem and can even burn dvd's.

so it can read/burn dvd's fine but can't read cd's.

i've upgraded the firmware as well to the latest version and thought that would help, but no...

so is this a laser problem? should i just get a new dvd writer or try and get this fixed?

    cheers!!!

Sounds like it is the part of the drive that reads CD's is defective alright. You could test it in another PC just to be a 100% certain but seeing as you already tried a few things I doubt the outcome will be any different.

If the drive is no longer under warranty then just get something new like a BenQ 1650 for €42 [great DVD/CD writer].

My ageing Philips DVD+RW-D28 (2.4x) is only able to read cd-rs it burned itself. Never been able to find a solution, it acts the same irrespective of the computer or software used, and the problem doesnt occur with DVDs!

Hardly worth spending the time to even figure out if it a strange software problem anymore.

thanks 8T8, don't think it's worth the hassle anyway when new drives are as cheap as that!!

There are 2 pick up's on DVD combo drive. One pick up for CD read and write. And one for DVD read and write.

In this case it looks like the CD pick up is not working.

You will need a new drive if you want to CD read and write
