Delayed til January 07 "to improve secutity"

Yes there are still loads of versions, Ultimate edition is the best all round version and includes the best multimedia features like Media center edition.

That far away? Feck sake with the hype I thought it was a few months....still if it means they come out with an un-rushed OS for once I'll be happy. Isn't Ultimate the most expensive package?

We are talking microsoft here. Hype and multi-month delays are normal. Delays of over a year are common. And don't forget that VISTA has dropped many features to allow it to be shipped this fast !

Besides with any mostly new microsoft product a lot of people wait till at least the first major service pack. I'd go so far as to say it's about SP2/third attempt for most versions of windows before they are stable/have all the features you'd expect. The main exception would be Dos 5. I'm still not sure about Windows 2003 - depends on how many design flaws need to be fixed in SP2

Dropped features? really? Care to explain which ones?

They had some function that Vista would boot up in only 2-3 seconds but they dropped that one

Don't forget that vista is really only a partial release, you have to wait until the next version of windows to get all the advertiesed features.

    Features delayed

    * WinFS is the codename for a planned relational database layer built on top of NTFS, and is loosely based on SQL Server 2005. In August 2004, Microsoft announced that WinFS would not be included in Windows Vista. This was due to time constraints in developing the technology; Microsoft will probably release WinFS in 2007 as an update. Microsoft has been working on this technology since the mid 1990s.
    * Due to scheduling issues, the Windows Command Shell (MSH), code-named Monad will not be included in Windows Vista. However, it will likely be available for download by the time Vista is available.
    * Owing to significant difficulties in getting third-party developers to support the system (particularily due to the lack of support for writing for the Trusted Operating Root using .NET managed code), the Next-Generation Secure Computing Base architecture was abandoned for Windows Vista.[1] Some aspects of the NGSCB initiative, such as support for Trusted Platform Module chips, are still present, though its role is now limited to being a provider of cryptographic functions which will support BitLocker Drive Encryption.
    * Support for Intel's Extensible Firmware Interface was originally slated to be included with Vista, but has been removed due to what Microsoft has described as a lack of support on desktop computers. EFI support is still slated for Windows Server "Longhorn".

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_%22Vienna%22
Windows "Vienna" (formerly known as Blackcomb) is Microsoft's codename for the successor to Microsoft Windows Vista and "Longhorn Server", originally announced in February 2000, but since subject to major delays and rescheduling.
    ...
The code name "Blackcomb" was originally assigned to a version of Windows that was planned to follow Windows XP (codenamed "Whistler"; both named after the Whistler-Blackcomb resort) in both client and server versions. However, in August 2001, the release of Blackcomb was pushed back several years and Vista (originally codenamed "Longhorn" after a bar in the Whistler-Blackcomb resort) was announced as a release between XP and Blackcomb. Since then, the status of Blackcomb has undergone many alterations and PR manipulations, ranging from Blackcomb being scrapped entirely, to becoming a server-only release. In January 2006, Blackcomb was renamed to "Vienna" [1]. Vienna is still planned as both a client and server release with a current release estimate of anytime between 2009-2012 (although no firm release date or target has yet been publicised).

Vista is just the Server 2003/XP Kernel re-written.

    Look at this:

    http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1931914,00.asp

It seems Vista may actually be good, and DX10 seems very good, and it support DX9 games also.

Hopefully the only problem will be DRM:mad:

P.s DX10 is vista only, and there wont be a version released for XP:(

What the.....so Vista isn't really the follow on from XP, just a stopgap or something?

What, so is it like Windows ME then. Just something to throw out there thats probably going to be crap and buggy as hell.

Also, is this version going to be primarily releashed as a 32-bit system, or is it all 64-bit?

It is based on XP, but its not a bodged like Windows Me.

Did you read the article? It seems like it will be good, if it ever gets released on time:D
