a real asskicking year for Rock

Rockfans are being spoiled - Maiden, Metallica, Alice Cooper, Ted Nugent, Thin Lzyy, Guns and Roses ... they all seem to play Ireland this year which is brilliant.

What do you think is the reason that people want to listen to hard rock bands on a larger scale again?

Fed up of the same lifeless commercial garbage shoved down everyone's throats? I'd wager so.

People are just digging up music better nowadays, people don't settle as much as they did with what the record companies and MTV have told them is good and bad music.
Alot of them are just arriving at the same conclusion: there has to be more to music than all these Strokes/Kasier Chiefs sound-a-likes, not to mention the endless wealth of solo female artists who either sound like Nora Jones or Christina Aguilera minus talent and range (thanks, Pro-Tools). And dance music hasn't really changed in years (still goes UN-TIS UN-TIS UN-TIS UN-TIS until the end of time). People are just sick of mindless, soulless products from the "music" factory.

now take that list you compiled there and get a list of the bands playing the UK. yes, we're not so spoiled now, are we?

    That sums it all up.

Also Agreed. I'd love to see any new decent Hard Rock bands emerging, instead of the music industry trying to force feed us the same bland bands.

The industry signs bands these days according to the current trend, talent seemingly has little to do with it anymore. The "fashion police" that be decide that a certain craze or type of music is 'in' at the moment and they go on that (does anyone remember the latin craze a few years back  - I'll say no more!). Then totally overplays them and bores us to tears with the same unorigional s**t until people stop buying their records.

It just alienates a lot of people from popular music altogether, and makes them look to the past for what they want to hear.

There are loads more bands playing, not just the mainstream rock bands.

You have bands like Vader, Illdisposed, Severe Torture, Bolt Thrower, God Dethroned, Obituary, Suffocation, Necrophagist, Alarum, Nailed, Blind Guardian

    all playing Dublin this year

OP - In fairness those bands are all what you'd call dadrock. At this stage, the music of most of those bands as become every bit as 'bland' as the commercial crap the industry churns out. I'd much prefer if we had more contemporary bands playing.

Also, people should realise that what you may see as "lifeless commercial garbage", is, in fact, what the tasteless masses want to hear. If you don't like it, it's very easy just not to listen to the radio or watch Mtv. Never complain about that which you need not subject yourself to, eh?

Anyway, yeah, believe it or not, that commercial garbage is what the majority of people seem to enjoy hearing. I think I'd be right in assuming that everyone on this music board is a music connoisseur to one degree or another, which puts you in the minority. I daresay some of us utterly relish knowing that, too. No-one can shove music down my throat, because if I don't like it I won't listen to it.

Yes but notice how the post was titled "asskicking year for ROCK" not metal, but good point anyway, more bands are playing Ireland these days. It was great to see, Dragonforce, Whitesnake, Malmsteen, Dio, Alice Cooper and loads more, playing here over the past two or so years and hopefully the number will rise.

"DadRock" is obviously what the OP is interested in so it isnt bland for him. this is a post about how this year will be a good year for the people who like all the afore mentioned bands so jesus stop complaining about it and post in a topic of the music of your choice.

As Ph3nom said, all those bands will play Ireland (Plus Saxon), but the Wacken line-up and the Party-Sans line up is just....secks.
Wacken are still adding bands to the bill, and its so far, Emperor, Celtic Frost, Nevermore, Opeth, Motorhead,Atheist, Amon Amarth.Wintersun and an arseload of bands.
Party-Sans has Naglfar, Mourning Beloveth, Cryptopsy, Marduk, Thyrfing, Desaster, Destroyer 666(Who'll be playing soon enough here), Nifelheim, Watain, Rotten Sound and a good few more.

It should be a good year, and with the year of the anti-christ (6th of 6th 06) what better way to celebrate? :D

Yeah mate, chillax, alright? I made one reference to the fact that some people might see his taste in music as being 'bland'. Don't bother telling me where to post unless you can make me. Which you can't. So take your own advice and stop complaining.

Everyone needs to chillax. As pointed out by Phenom, it's a great year for live music for fans of Rock, or Metal. Be happy.

    Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Rock!

Gotta agree about us not getting nearly as many bands as the UK, though. Several of my favourite bands went to play London and even Belfast this year, but no Dublin date. Weaksauce.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

Yeah, this is a hell of a metal year so far, two shows by Obituary, and that Cryptopsy festival night, as well as all the bands on those bills, and so many others.

sorry, i was a bit harsh alright.

Yeah but Wacken this year seems to be a big Black/Death metal fest, two years ago the line up was much much more varied with plenty of classic rock/metal bands playing such as Dio, Twisted Sister, W.A.S.P., Doro & Warlock, Motorhead, Saxon, Quireboys, Zodiac Mindwarp and Anthrax along side loads of other bands like Children Of Bodon, Cannibal Corpse, Arch Enemy, Cathedral, Satyricon etc there was something for everyone.

EDIT: hmm, it seems some more bands have been added to the bandlist since i looked abot a month ago, Whitesnake, Michael Shenker Group, Scorpions, Uli Jon Roth. So with a few more months to go, who knows who else will be added

    Hmmm
...well is nice these bands are coming here I supppose..just a pity wasnt 15 years ago or so...I think this country has missed a lot of the great bands and some that are left just wont come here...but ya never know. One point about the new if yu like revisiting of DAD rock?..its not only that a lot of people are tired of music industry tripe pop stuff...but also,,,a lot of folks are getting tired of the same ol wearisome hard edge metal stuff thats being churned out band after band ...
A lot of folks seem to think a return to the top notch musicians in the hard/classic rock realm is what they want....and therefore....yep,,,their getting more popular again damm goood tooo . Aint been to any gigs over here since Jethro Tull 23 years ago...great band still ,,,the rest ,,ahh couldnt be bothered with em...same ol same. ol...Ill go to the UK to see THE boys when they return *maybe later this year*,,,the rest??..fuk em would'nt waiste a penny on most of the bands that come here...seen Lizzy in 78 great then no need to go see a shadow of them now Saxon too in 1980 great band then...now?...not so sure..but maybe...

    well thats my 2 cents worth......ciao' amigos...Baggio.......

Jesus I do hate the term "Dadrock".

Anyway I think these type of bands are alot more accessable and accepted in the mainstream than they were in their heyday.

Although most people still like the easy options of pop etc,I have to say that I cant remember an era where so many types and style of music are accepted without being instantly frowned upon.

^^TBH it seems like there's as much genre-prejudice as ever. One need only bring up the topic of "emo" around those who've mounted the anti-emo bandwagon. Or to bring up any band heavier than green day around anyone who listens to pussycat dolls or whatever other krud Mtv is playing. Then there are the classic rock obsessives who hate anything more recent than the 90's on principle.
I mean, jeez, we in this very thread instantly frowned upon "pop".

That is Rock and Metal for you.

Person 1: "I'm more metal than you I listen to X"
Person 2: "Pfft... They're pop shíte, try listening to a real band, like Y"

These "fans" seem to have no interest in anything other than making themselves look/sound better than their fellow metal fans. Sometimes I wonder whether they're into any form of music at all.

Christina Aguilera minus talent and range

Have to pull you up on that one I'm afraid!! I don't like her music but you canny say the girl can't sing, that's just dumb...

Well, multiply that X100 for punk. Mention a band; any band at all, and they'll tell you how that band isn't real punk. I mean, so what? If the freakin' intervals sound good in my ear I'll listen to it. It's insane. You'd swear non-punk music didn't exist or something.

I don't believe he was suggesting Aguilera was minus talent and range, quite the opposite ;)

Motorhead are playing this year, Nevermore arent either Death/Black, Gamma Ray are also playing, neither death/black.There are a few other bands there that aren't death/black.There's always a good variation at wacken.

Inferno fest is more BM/DM, hense Immortal this year :D

I know that there was a few non BM/DM bands playing but at the time of my checking the majority of bands were BM/DM, but as i said, the variety of different bands playing is ever increasing with the latest additions.

Yeah, were talking bout all these great rock or metal bands playing, and yes, it is amazing, but were forgetting some other great bands. think of it: The Who, Robert Plant, Roger Waters(the lad from Pink Floyd, not fully sure on his name), Art Garfunkal?? All these are playin outside of Dublin, so no point on just concentrating there. I know the people i suggested are all on their own now(apart from the Who), but ya cant deny the others respective pasts in terms of rock music!(Im just not sure whether i should have included Art Garfunkal in there)

Although Garfunkel is everything but rock he still is up there with the biggest names at least vocal wise, so when it comes down to talent I´d say we can count him in.

And yes, we are forgetting other great bands like the ones you mentioned. I am also looking forward to FOREIGNER who play a european tour soon, I dunno wether or not we will see them here

The quote of Pornapster's is especially relevant when talking with those into raw BM and DM, cant say you like a band without them saying "They're shíte!!", and then following with "Listen to Xasthur!!" or something. The ironing is delicous actually :)
