Yeah Maplins again. €57 for this -
    http://www.nec.co.uk/ND3550.aspx

It's not in their main catalogue cos it's a special offer thingy. Seems pretty fast - I've just burnt a 4.32gb movie in 6.5 minutes on a DVD-R disk, think it was an 8x disk so a 16x should be faster.

(and I'm on a Mac with it in an external box!)

the 3500 series are the mutts nuts, one of the few bits of pc kit that i wouldn't hesitate to recommend:)
they're absolutely rock solid and you'd be unlucky if it produced a coaster, even on the cheapest of media.
    dead quiet at 8x too

I recently bought one from Komplett and have had huge getting any any commercial CD/DVD burning software to recognise it. Nero etc dont see it as a recordable drive. The only one I got working was a freebie - CDBurnerXP Pro.
    Anyone else have this problem?

I had 2 NEC DVD burners a year or two back, both gave up the ghost, worked for a while and then nothing, also towards the end of the 2nd one's life it would not recognise some of the newer blanks.
Thankfully they were within guarantee from Komplett so I opted for a Pioneer and it was rock solid, took everything and no coasters.
From my experience with NEC drives I would not recommend.

Really happy with my NEC (about a year old) - no problems using it with Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 and DVD Decrypter.

which version of windows are you using?
and is it an up to date version of Nero that you tried?
flashing the drive's firmware might be worth a shot...
