My da is nearly 50 and is about 2 stone over weight. Used to play a bit of indoor football but that's kinda been abandoned with a change of job.

So anyway, I'm thinking of encouraging him to start MMA training. With basic goals being new hobby, getting a bit fitter, not becoming the next Randy Couture.

Having said that, I'm not too keen on Muay Thai or Boxing sparring cause that's a bit rough. But things like BJJ and Submission wrestling should be fine.

So just wondering if there are any issues I should be aware of. Like if any of the older people on this board got an age specific advice?

I'm not old, but I've never seen anybody of old age having problems grappling. If he's a bit out of shape and overweight, he might want to do a bit of running for his cardio and maybe some swimming too.. Nothing too intensive, just to get his lungs working.

Yes ok. I see your point. But if did a bit of running and swimming he probably wouldn't need to do the MMA.

He doesn't have to do MMA, maybe a bit of grappling will be fine for him. But a run and a swim will help him too with it. Nothing worse gassing in the first five minutes of grappling class.

Cycling or swimming...something low impact to start with....

    HI MaxBax,

Id say BJJ is good. Its low impact and you can take it at your own pace. The best thing to do is for him to go to a class and give it a look. Some clubs have very young guys but some have people of the above 40 range :D

    Beats swimming any day :D

imo he should avoid running cause it's extremely high impact. i'm not a fan of cycling - low impact but i've heard lots of bad things about it and had problems with it myself.
swimming rocks - cardio, no impact and builds strength too.
walking (a bit faster than normal) is very good as it has just a bit of impact.
and bjj rocks cause its one of the few (only??) low impact sporting MAs.
for a different angle - tai chi is really good for health.

EDIT: PS. oh ye forgot to say, i ain't old either i just want to help the aged!!
