I bought a 400GB Seagate Barracuda 7800.8 Hdd from someone here on boards. I have an external enclosure and was using it as an external hdd. Yesterday it stopped working. When I turned it on the led on I could here it spin but the LED on the enclosure stayed red and it didn't show up on the PC. It was working perfectly on wednesday and I didn't even move it since then. I took it out of the enclosure and tried it in the spare bay in my PC. The PC wouldn't even turn on as it couldn't find the drive.
Is there any chance of getting it working again? If not would the data on it be revoverable?

can u put it in as a slave on the pc and browse it?

    edit,

if u put it in the spaer bay in ur pc and the pc wldnt turn in u need to change the jumper settings to make it as slave, i think!

check the bios to make sure its set up ok

    Nope.

    edit after seeing your edit:
I think I have it set to slave. can't quite remember what the setting for slave is. I don't have the jumper accross anything.

On the drive will be an image showing the following

    : : : :
    ms sl cs

Or similar, they mean ms = Master, sl = Slave cs = Cable Select

Set to slave and then it should load.

    |:| : : : Master = on, Slave = off
    : |:| : : Cable Select
    : : : |:| Limits drive to 32Gbytes

Thats whats written on it. I took that to mean that
    : : : :
    means slave
Is that right? Thats what I had it set to while in the enclosure and I'm fairly sure that it was the same when I put it in my PC (as a secondary hdd) when I first got it.

just looked at a 20gig seagate and it says that a slave is no pins bridged - If I remember right my 40gig seagate I use as a master is the same. So I'd assume it's the same for all seagates...

So I had it set right. And it won't work. Back to my original questions.

Find or download a copy of GetDataBack for NTFS hook the HDD upto you comp, scan drives with GDB,pick the 400GB Drive option (if it even shows up!) and you might be able to get your info off it. Tips for fixing the drive are, leave it over night in a freezer then plug it in the next day.(Sometimes works!) or if it sounds like the read head of the HDD is "stickling" as its called give it a gentle drop onto a padded surface to try and free up the arm. (While its turned off though!)

guys if its spinning shoudlnt it be seen in the bios if it the jumper settings are ok?

I remember having he same probs before and i have to do trial and error with the jumpers settinfs while both h'ds were plugged in to get it sorted

    Seriously?

Ya the freezer trick works, but as a last resort. Check to see if the head of the drive is moving by giving the drive a quick shake, if you hear some thing move inside the drive then the head is free. I wouldnt count on getting you data back it sounds like the hdd is dead as a dodo.

If the freezer thing does work will I be able to get my data back?
Also how likely would it be to fail again?

The freezer is a get data back only option, not supposed to fix the problem completely just let you possibly get your info off to put on a New hard drive........

problem is though that if it is not detected in the bios no software will be able to locate it and you can not get your data back

Thats the problem now, but will freezing it help that?
