can't install IIS or IBserver on pc

I’m getting fairly frustrated with this problem as I can't see what the problem is. I'm trying to install IIS on my father’s pc
    WIN XP PRO SP1:
    p4- 2ghz
    224mb ram
    60gb hardrive (plenty of space)

I have two windows cds, both pro, one is SP1 and the other is SP2. I have tried both after countless uninstalls and reboots. All the installations seem to go without a hitch. When I type in localhost or http://localhost into the browser window the connection just times out.

I have also attempted to install IBserver and the same problem occurs. Localhost just completely times out. I'm not getting any error messages or anything. Apache is running, so too is MySQL.

I ran a virus check on the pc it came back with the all clear. Any ideas?

You're not setting Apache and IIS to listen on the same port by any chance are you? You should set one to listen on 80, and the other on something else (usually 8080).

hi aidan, it hasn't made any difference i'm afraid. I configured the httpd.conf file to listen for apache on 8080 but the connection is still timing out when i go to both
    http://localhost
    &
    http://localhost:8080

netstat -a @ cmd prompt and check for the port...
With Apache, there should be a Test Config file - use it.
    Check browser (proxy) settings.
Disable Show Friendly errors (In IE -> Tools-> Internet Options -> Advanced)
    Try http://127.0.0.1
Check your firewall settings. Disable temporarily perhaps.
