Computer Won't Boot

    Hey there,

Bought parts for a computer, mostly second hand. Power up, dvd drive works, power to usb and lights. speaker doesn't work so no beep codes. Hard drive doesn't even spin up despite switching with many power cords(tested in external drive, works no prob). I installed the cpu myself...however i put it on wrong way first and some compound got left on the cpu. Is it possible that there is bad contact which causes no boot up? is the cpu the first item at POST? there is no signal to the monitor aswell. It knows it is there though as it changes lights to orange whenever plugged into computer. This is usually a RAm problem i think, so is it possible that ram which is ecc and registered wouldnt be compatible with the motherboard. I havent a clue whats going on. tommorow im going to replace everything and hope for the best. The Cpu and hard drive are new. The case and motherboard is second hand but great condition. The ram is used too. The power supply is 300w, but i tried just plugging the hard drive in and no joy. Motherboard is a Liteon NR120-N intel 845-g...Celeron D 310 2.13 ghz 533 fsb..250gb seagate.

Please help...this was supposed to be a replacement for my laptop which is dead. now this problem, any help to relieve my stress is much appreciated. Thnks in advance

Theres a possiblity that the RAM isnt compatible with that motherboard as ECC registered RAM tends to be for servers really.I would try (if you have the option) the cpu in another mobo you know to be working and see if it gets to the post. Also try normal PC133 or DDR ram (which ever it maybe) to eliminate it from the suspect list.Even just the cpu in the board with no ram and nothing else should give you some beep codes if the processor is working so you could try that too.........
