    Hey,

Can anyone tell me what the deal is with newer amd opterons?? I have read numerous posts that have said that they are good overclockers but how do you tell which processors run on which sockets. Most websites are not that clear.
Aslo where can I get a reliable graph of proce/performance ratio with other amd chips??

    940 must use EEC RAM
939 can use unregistered RAM e.g normal DDR400

See Opteron overclocking wiki for more information
    http://wiki.extremeoverclocking.com/wiki/Opteron

Some more info on overclocking a Opteron 165 here.

As always overclocking is not a guarantee I've come across plenty of CPU's that fit the mold for great overclockers and just failed to do so.

Unless you are going to heavily overclock the Opteron it is not a good buy in terms of cost/performance the Athlon 64's at the same clock speed and higher are cheaper and will offer better performance at a lower price. For example the cheapest Opteron is just under €200 at 1.8Ghz for an extra €25 you can get an Athlon 64 at 2.2Ghz for €225 from Komplett.
