I have 7gb of music taking up too much space on my pc harddrive on i-tunes so I tried to transfer it to a mini external hard drive 8gb.Ifollowed instructions and -created a new location in folder on additional drive.,enable copy files and organise options. Then i consolidated library. Now I have about 600 songs transferred to ext. disk ,all are still on i-tunes and I gained no space on pc harddrive. Please help. Thanks

Having not gone into the instructions myself, I'm pretty sure you can delete the originals now... Even if it doesn't work, all you have to do is copy them back from the external HDD.

The songs will still be on your computer when you copied them over. They will only go off your computer if you say "Move" instead of copy. If you copied them over, and they are on the other harddrive, then you can safely remove them from the one that you want to free up space on.

Basically you have made a copy, and now there are two of each songs, so you need to delete the one on your main hd

I just figured it ou myself that I copied rather than moved.I'll delete one lot now and hope for the best.

Would be very careful using Move if the music is valuable to you, better to copy them first to ext. HD, check to ensure a good transfer then delete the originals when your satisfied they are ok

    Just being careful ;)

Have successfully moved files but now here 's my next problem.MY local disk c only shows a gain of almost 2gb even though I moved over 7gb to the external hard drive.Any explanations? Also please while I'm here,if I tick "compress drive to save disk space" what will this do in effect.Thanks.

i can't believe how itunes is so ****, apple seriously need to bring out proper software for their ipods

Deleting just moves files to Recycle Bin.
You need to empty the bin to reclaim the space.
    • From the desktop, double-click the Recycle Bin icon.
    • From the File menu, click Empty Recycle Bin.
My opinion on compressing your hard drive to save disk space is that it's not generally recommended.
Most music files are already compressed so you'll gain little there.
Other files and applications will take longer to open or run following compression as they must be uncompressed first.
If more space is required you're better off getting a larger hard drive.

    Really?!

It is a simple matter of copying or moving the iTunes folder in the "My Music" folder to whatever other drive.

If that's complicated then maybe you should stick to vinyls!

thanks odonnellcarey-the answer is so obvious when somebody tells me.I'm happy now I managed to free up over 20gb space between an external hd and using my i-pod as removable disk.So I certainly won't compress files.
Fighting Irish-a bad workman blames his tools,so I always presume its my mistakes not the i-pods!!!

But you're blatently anti-Apple, so unless you can offer reasons your opinion ain't worth squat.

im not anti apple, my girlfriend has an ipod and i used itunes for her a few times and imo its crap, you can't use it with 2 PCs , it takes ages "updating ipod" obviously if you use it day in day out its very simple to use but in reality it blows.

What are you rabbiting about now?
Why would you use an iPod on two computers?
You can have the same library on two computers or indeed on an external drive as a back up.

Do you understand what iTunes is designed for?

What do you recommend as a replacement for the iPod and could you give reasons why?

Firstly, iTunes can be used across multiple computers.
Secondly, iPods can be also be used across multiple computers.
Thirdly, iTunes is simple to use, everything is in front of you in one simple window, that is clearly laid out. I compare it directly to Creative, Sony and IAudio software, and it wins hands down in each case. A direct comparison can be made to WMP and again, iTunes is the simpler of the two that achieves the same functionality.
