Can divx be played on a projector? I have tried a few files and they just show black on the projector. I have the latest version of divx player.
Also, whats the best way to convert divx to dvd format (vob) using free programs. Thanks.

Try using vlc media player (www.videolan.org). There's no reason that divx would not display on a projector, unless your video resolution is being changed to something that the projector can't support (this should not be happening).

google diko for conversion to dvd.

It is the same in VLC.

In normal mode the projector shows the player and the desktop behind it but where the file is playing just comes up black on the projector screen.

I just read on another forum that divx is not compatible with projectors. That was in 2004 though so I would have thought something would have come out to change that.

I played a divx file on a projector. Just make sure you have the resolution set.
Do you see the PC desktop on the projector?

Try doing an extended desktop, making the projector your second screen. Play the file on monitor No.1 and drag the window to monitor No.2

See if it then shows up.

As I said earlier it shows the desktop- just a black space where the divx is playing.

Im using diko- its looking for an avi. The file is divx which is mpeg isn't it? So it cannot see the divx file. How do I use diko to convert the divx to dvd? Thanks for the advice.

Divx can DEFINITELY be played on a projector. A projector is just a video output receiver. I have played divx on my projector.

Try reinstalling the divx codec. Failing that, try playing other compressed video sources (e.g. xvid). Are you sure that the file isn't just corrupt?

You could also convert it to some other compression format using virtualdubmod or autogk or something like that.

The file is playing on the laptop screen. In the place of where I can see it on the laptop screen, on the projector screen there is only black. Where I can see the desktop behind the divx on the laptop screen, I can see that on the projector screen.
    The divx codec is 100%.

I'll second Khannie on that. I play divx on my dlp projector all the time with no problems. Makes no difference if I use the divx player, vlc, wmp, winamp or power dvd. All work fine for me..

    :)

Im not saying it cannot work. Im trying to figure out why mine wont work.
Perhaps anything to do with the laptop display drivers? I updated them a few months ago.

Mess around with your graphics card settings and the settings for your video playing program. Try enabling/disabling overlays and other settings. It should work.

Actually rethink on my above comment. If I remember right I had to enable extended desktop every time I tried viewing. Switched to dual monitor mode and problem cleared. Think those were divx files. Only happened on a couple of files though ..

dual monitor should be in advanced settings of desktop properties - don't have my lappy on so unsure of the exact path. You could try that maybe?

    :)

    Disable video hardware acceleration.
If it plays ok it's an overlay issue.

    Start/Run

    "dxdiag"

    Goto the video tab

Hit the first two disbale options.

Have you tried any other formats of file? WMA, etc.

It's because the video is displayed using overlay which can't be shown on multiple screens at once. There's a couple of things you can try to sort it out. One being to just use the projector instead of cloning the display on both laptop and projctor. Another is to make the projector the primary display in your graphics driver (you'll need to close any open video windows to do this).

Thanks for the replies. Cheers stevenmu. IT was the overlay. Went to the overlay tab and there was a checkbox for theatre mode. That did it. It shows the divx on the screen while allowing me to change any settings on the laptop without showing them on the PJ screen.
