It took me the guts of 30 seconds to load this page... Anybody had a problem with browsing before? The odd page will load in a matter of seconds, but most are taking up to thirty seconds. It's not 30 seconds of activity though, I'm running DUmeter and for the 30 seconds there is no activity at all, and then the download will jump to about 30kB for a second and that will be enough to retrieve the page.

So is my problem with the wireless eircom router or my laptops settings?

My Eircom Broadband is real slow. I was going to ask+ why +in a seperate+ thread but +ill +just leech off this +instead. Its faster than dial-up but not by much.

Is it the same problem as myself?

Change of pace now, boards seems to be running faster than everything else! It takes google still up to 30 seconds to load... but boards is now loading at proper expected bb speeds... i'm confused!

Open your Network Connections window(Network Connections should be in the start menu, if not try Control Panel) and right click on Wireless Network Connection or Local Area Connection, depending on whether you connect wirelessly or by LAN cable. When you right click you will see an option called Properties, click that.

That will open a window with lots of bits and pieces, but in the scroll box on that window scroll down until you find Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) and double click on it.

That will open up yet another box, on which you will see Obtain DNS Server address automatically and Use the following DNS server address. You want to check the second option and enter the following:

    Preferred DNS Server: 213.94.190.194
    Alternate DNS Server: 213.94.190.236

That should be the trick. If they're already entered with different numbers, change them to the ones i gave you. If the ones I gave you are already there then the DNS settings aren't your preoblem I guess!

Same here - finding it slow but wondering if it's the wireless router.
Got the eircom wireless netopia router last week - and got the usb wireless adaptor 54Mbps, 1.0 USB on laptop, Can't seem to get 54Mbps connection to router.

Broadband seems very slow this evening

Changed DNS settings...reading forum in wrong order.
    Did test on www.irishisptest.com

    59Kbps download
    216Kbps upload

    This is like dialup.

Must try directly at the router but pretty pathetic response.
Was working fine last Sat when I installed from scratch.
Brand new phoneline in new house.

Check the line speed that the router syncs with.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28 AnnaF

    How do I do that?

    ping the router

Pinging 192.168.1.254 with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 192.168.1.254: bytes=32 time=3ms TTL=255
    Reply from 192.168.1.254: bytes=32 time=4ms TTL=255
    Reply from 192.168.1.254: bytes=32 time=2ms TTL=255
    Reply from 192.168.1.254: bytes=32 time=3ms TTL=255

    Ping statistics for 192.168.1.254:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 2ms, Maximum = 4ms, Average = 3ms

Moved router, reset it and wireless connection.
This is really like dialup. I know there's a contention ratio but I didn't think performance would be this poor.

The problem is not the contention ratio. I have absolutely no idea how to find the line stats on a Netopia. You can point your web browser to the router (http://192.168.1.254 in this case) and display various aspects of it. Usually there's a status page or a modem status page or a line status page or something. You should see the speed that the modem has connected with. If you're on a 2048/256 package you should find that speed somewhere. The reason I ask is that if your line is really poor, the modem can sync at a lower speed to make up for this. But it's never below 256kbps and it's nearly theoretically impossible to get that low a speed and still pass the test, but it's still worth checking to eliminate it.

Have you tried without the wireless connection? You could be getting interference from somebody else using the same channel as you, if there are other networks in your vicinity. The best thing to do is to try to eliminate as much as possible from the equation.

    Cheers for the tips. 2048/256
Doubt there's another wireless connection around here but it's best to rule everything out.
Going to go through the eircom troubleshooting suggestions tomorrow.

And you never will get 54Mps on a 1.0 USB laptop as the top speed of USB 1.0 (are you sure its not 1.1?) is 12 Mps afaik, so you see it will never be able to use its full bandwith as its restricted by the USB bus.

That doesn't explain the slowness of your BB connection btw, try a site survey on laptop and see if you find any other APs on the same channel as yours. If you have a DECT cordless that could be interfering too...:(

The max 'actual throughput' of usb 1.1 is more like 3.8Mb/s. This should still be ok for a 2Mb line assuming you dont have other people using the wireless LAN at the same time.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28 AnnaF

Thanks Snaga & MunsterCycling for the info.

I knew there something had to be limiting throughput to 11Mbps...USB - 1.1.
Bandwidth was up again yesterday afternoon and today also. No others on the LAN so should be okay for now. Laptop is heading for 4 years old so can't complain.

The DECT phone might also come into the equation too.

Try turning the DECT off and then try to use wifi, may need to reset router etc just to be sure. Check on the phone to see if it is using 2.4Ghz if nothing about this then google the model number and name of phone for info.. :)
