Got a pretty basic question here. I have a laptop with an internal 56k modem and i have the net at home on the desktop. I was wondering is it possible to simplt remove the modem connection wire and connect my laptop to the internet connection socket to get the net on my laptop?

    Thanks.

Not quite sure what you mean.

All you need to do is plug your laptop's internal modem into a telephone socket.

Eh, you'll need to put some settings in too... or ,at least, use a CD from an ISP... To tell your laptop who to ring ...

http://www.supranet.net/pdf/dialup_xp.pdf this guide will walk you through it just replace supranets dial up number with that of your isp. You should be able to find this on your desktop or on their website. Or just tell us who they are and one of us is bound to know the number.
