I've recently gotten into watching these on sky one when they come on and I have to admit... they are the absolute stuff of legend.
For some reason I had written these off as dross but au contraire mon frere, the masterpiece quality of these films is only apparent to me now on the cusp of my thirties. The eye of the tiger training music, when he runs with the kids to the top of the steps, that is an absolutely classic scene in cinema!!

The years I've spent overlooking the genius of Rocky!! And the best part of all is that IV is next week... Ivan Drago.. the best one of them all!!

It's a pity about number 5, it should really be stricken from all known records and the new film coming out should be number 5. Tommy "The Machine" Gunn, sucked ass big time, terrible film. I liked the other 4, especially number 3.

Well they're great if viewed as an action-type, switch off your brain films.

The one problem I have is that original Rocky was such a good film all round, but its been tainted a bit by the sequels. The whole premise of the first film was the underdog getting his chance, the washed up fighter with one shot at greatness. Rocky busted a gut training, was in the best shape of his life, went into the ring with Creed, fought his heart out, BUT STILL LOST! However, he won back his self esteem and the respect of Apollo Creed. Creed knew he had been in a fight and his "No rematch, no rematch" to Rocky at the end is a great moment. It's just a shame they did rematch, and the films slowly got worse and descended into the type of cliches that the first film avoided.

Still, I take your point that they are just fun to watch. Mr T. as Clubber Lang is feckin scary!!

    Agree - 5 shouldn't have been made.

1-4 are really enjoyable and you have to take your hat off to Stallone for changing his body the way he did. I am watching them again on sky 2 and the difference between him in Rocky 2 and and Rocky 3 is amazing.

Already looking forward to Rocky IV next week. Won't bother with V though.

Rocky single handedly ended the cold war. Think about it, Rocky IV came out in 85, this was around the begining of the thaw. A few years later the Soviet Union was no more.

The speech at the end of the Drago fight. What a man! Seriously, "if i can change, then you can change, and everyone can change". It brought the Russkies to their feet. John Lennon never put it so well.

Rocky IV. I don't know. What can I say?
The scene when he's chopping logs and lifting stones, while Ivan Drako is in a top notch gym... ...cinematic ecstasy!

I have indeed. It appears Sly want to do a "I'm still a man" version to tackle issues about men getting old etc.. Naturally he won't win, but I truly hope it never gets made.

I have the box set also, true cinema classics!! Who else started shadow boxing after the films ended when they were kids? heh, cool:cool:

Actor Dolph Lundgren told B & K Sports Magazine in January, 2003 that Sylvester Stallone may be writing his character, Ivan Drago, into the film. "Sly's writing a new Rocky, the sixth one, and tells me he's going to try and write Ivan Drago in it. There's no way I'd miss out on an opportunity on sparring with Balboa again. In my opinion Rocky IV was one of the best Rocky sequels. Not the least - the better of my films."

That's probably the only intelligent thing this guy has ever said.

Shadow boxing!?! Unfortunatly for us, we had an older cousin that boxed, so we use to take a glove each and leather each other. :o

Is Adrian dead in this new outting? It says on imdb that she's in it, but it's only archive footage, i can just imagine the flashbacks in this movie!! pure cheese.

I love the first 3 rocky flicks, and the first time i saw 4 i loved it, but seeing it again last year I realised its pretty appalling! There is some great bits but generally it pails in comparison. The most important thing is that Bill conti is not on the tunes and there is no rocky anthem which takes away big time. watching 5 is hard, at some points you question how a film this bad can get made but it was.
Rocky 1 by the way beat All the Presidents Men and Network to win the oscar for best picture that year.
Who said Sly had no talent?!

...and Taxi Driver. It's worth noting the Sly wrote it aswell.

The story goes (and please correct me if I'm wrong):
Sly wrote it and wanted to get it made, but the people he origionally went to told him they'd buy it off him only. He held onto it, as he wanted to act in it aswell, and one thing lead to another and he finally got the backing to make it. (Launching his acting career)

...so I've been led to believe.

Watched Rocky III the other night as well, had forgotten how homoerotic the training montage was! Must be up there with Top Gun.

Ah, the Rocky films are great. Really great. You can't not love at least one. Bring on VI!

Ah rocky 5 was a mistake. Some of the greatest quotes was rocky 3

Clubber Lang:"Hey, woman! Hey, woman! Listen here, since your old man ain't got no heart, maybe you'd like to see a real man! I bet you stay up late every night dreaming you had a real man, don't you? Why don't you bring your pretty little self over to my apartment tonight, and I'll show you a real man!" :D

    Rocky III quotoes

Just watching a clip on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjSU_MtvLpQ&search=rocky%20balboa) where he says he didn't like the way the last one turned out... I wonder if this will erase that from Rocky history?!

Ive posted this somewhere before but when i was america last summer i was reading Sly's magazine (imaginatively called SLY) and it had an extract from the movie script in it and it was actually pretty good and when i got to the end of it i was like MORE! NEED MORE! ha ha.

Hopefully it will banish the bad memories of 5.

I heard the opening sequence of the new film is Rocky at Adrien's funeral. Thats lousy. I feel sorry for Rock. 1st he gets brain damage, then Paulie loses all his money, then he's got to move into a crappy neighbourhood, now Adrien is dead.
I dont know how Rock is gonna cope, lucky he's got Paulie to rely on. I presume Paulie's reponse will be to drink whiskey, wear a stupid hat and generally be smelly.

these movies are good but not meant to take seriously. the first one was somewhat brilliant, but the four that came out after have no plot whatsoever. they make zero sense. i hate how stallone makes himself look like god in his movies and everyone else looks like crap. horrible, horrible actor.

have to agree each film got progressively worse until the fifth one is utter dross.

I think this one might be quite good though, especially as it is meant to open with Rocky at adrian's grave. I think I remember reading somewhere that it was adapted from a comic sly wrote about Rocky, not sure about this though could someone confirm/deny this??

I cant believe people are giving iv such an easy time. Im a huge Rocky fan but part four was without a doubt in my mind one of the worst films ever made. Rocky i was just a great great movie, Rocky ii is actually underatted as a movie in my opinion and is also class, Rocky iii is just pure fun and possibly one of the most entertaining movies ever, but four is horrible. the movie is the shortest out of them all and includes montages that go for over half the film and that stupid James Brown scene that seems to go on for five hundred years, what does that say about the film?. Then the end when he gets the whole russian government to stand to its feet by saying "we can all change"lol c'mon. It has also aged appalingly and the music is the cheesiest and most cliched I have ever heard in any movie. Just listen to the song where rocky arrives in Russia the lyrics are painful to listen to.

I was worried there that rocky was a gonner last night! But once he bloodied the russian I always felt he had a chance.

And what about that speech at the end? Forget the Hoff, surely *that* was the beginning of the end of the Cold War!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 347 ✭✭Concannon7

I cant enjoy the Rocky films whan I have to watch him actually fight in the film. They could as least have made the boxing somewhat realistic. Its terrible to watch the boxing matches.

Also the "If I can change, you can change" speech is very cringeworthy.

Yes in all his years of intense boxing training rocky never seemed to grasp the consept of actually lifting his hands above his chest. He should stop chasing chickens and chopping wood and concentrate on his guard.:D
