17GB of a problem - HELP

Ok I was using itunes a while ago to put music onto my mp3 player and the program froze up - it came back about a minute or so later but there was a problem - all my music (~17gb) is gone.
I found some in the recycle bin and restored that but thats only ~4gb back. The music was all stored on an external hard drive.
Is there any way of getting it back or am I screwed ?
I tried system restore but as I expected that that didnt help.
I'm afraid that because it was deleted from an external hard drive its going to be gone altogether.
Also hadnt got around to backing up the external HD (I've only had it about a week)
    PLEASE HELP.

I'm not entirely sure if this will work, but have you tried a disk recovery tool/software? Heres a link to a freeware version. http://www.pcinspector.de/download.asp?language=1#file_recovery
Hope it helps! Let us know of any proggression!

Firstly, do NOT write any more data to the hard drive! Something strange has happened, as there is absolutely no reason that the data should have been moved to the recycle bin. Look for a program called Getdataback. There is a Fat and a NTFS version of both these programs.

You should be able to get a full copy of each program if you pay for it, or look hard enough.*

Thanks for the replies guys - I recovered some of the files (~2GB) but a lot of the others were corrupted/incomplete.
I'vecome to the conclustion that i'll have to convert all my cd's and that all over again :(
Oh well it could have been worse i suppose
    Thanks again !

    was happening with my flatmate.

Music was removed deleted by iTunes. Some music would remain on the pc and disappear after a while. Other music would be deleted once any attempt was made to add it to the iTunes data base.

I got harangued by apple zombies for this, many stating it was my incompetence etc.

It wasn't. I uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled the latest version.

    Problems solved. Works perfectly now.
