Which USB hub

    Folks,
I'm getting a laptop soon, and I'll want to get a USB hub. But I'll want it to be portable - i.e. no power supply.
Firstly, are there any real consequences of using a four-port self-powered hub? I'm not sure if I'd ever actually use all 4 at the same time, but I don't see the point in getting a 2-port hub - using one laptop port up just to give one more extra port.

So, as long as there are no major issues with self-powered hub - can anybody recommend one? I has to look nice (sorry) preferably silver, as I'm getting a MacBook Pro.

I was going to go for this one until I realised it was mains powered.

    Cheers!
    S.

I got a 4 port hub from the euro shop in limerick for 2E, in fact i bought another three when I checked that it worked, not snazzy just clear plastic but for 2E I'm not complaining :). Its self powered about 2.5 inches width and lenght and 1/2 inch high.

    sinecurea,
As far as i know the reason the Hub is powered is so all ports will transfer data at the 2.0 standard or if the devise uses extra power it will work in a 4 port hub.

If you get the 4 port hub and do not use extra power some USB devices will not work or data will transfer at slower speeds (1.1).

Aye, I have one of those cheap 4 port hubs that are self powered, they work fine but certain things dont work well on it.. my iPod for example is pretty useless when connected to it, I also have a USB connection on my stereo and that refuses to work too... however my camera, mouse, zip drive, wifi dongle etc. all work perfectly
