Question for the dealers.

This is really a question for any dealers out there, hope it is not considered off topic. I am considering trying to get a job dealing during the summer and am interested in the opinions of any of you guys who have done or are doing this.

Did you find that your enjoyment of the game decreased to such a point that you no longer wanted to play it? At the moment I am really enjoying cards and am worried that this could be the case if I spent long hours dealing aswell. Did you find that your game improved at all? Can you combine playing well and working at the same time? Id imagine its very difficult to keep your concentration when you are continually invovled in a game either dealing or playing? Is it difficult to mantain a normal social life or do the late hours make this difficult?

    Any advice/comments greatly appreciated.

I often see threads on here looking for tournament dealers maybe that might be the best introduction to it, a long day at a tournament would give you a quick introduction into the world of dealing without committing yourself to a summer of it.

Often thought of trying to get the odd tournament to deal to see it from the other side.

    Hi

ive been dealing part time for over a year now. i only deal tournaments and i only work one (occasionaly two) nights a week.

Ive had a lot of part-time/seasonal/casual jobs over the years and i have to say dealing tournaments is probably the best. 8 hours pushing a cart around a warehouse is a long day, after the first two hours all you can think about is finishing and going home. 6 or 7 hours fly by dealing a tournament, for me anyway. when you first start its a bit nerve racking because youre focusing on not making any mistakes but once you've got a routine, you just go into auto pilot and take in the game and the table.
i would say my enjoyment of the game has increased becuase of dealing and that my game has improved. i dont have the concentration to make mental notes of everything i see a player doing but after a while you get a "feel" for when "John Doe regular" is at it again. It also lessens the wow factor of the game, after you deal your 10th ridiculous car crash hand youre no longer surprised when aces dont hold up.

i'd say delaing pot limit cash games 5 nights a week does take it out of you, but there are people on here far more qualified then me to talk about that.

id reccomend it. 99.9% of the players you meet are nice decent people who wont give you grief. and the 0.1% of the time when you do get a little grief its usually because the player is tilting or angry at something else and the next time you see them theres no hard feelings.

    hope this helped.

agree totally with sendic i do the exact same thing as him one or two nights a week and the nite flys by moneys not bad esp if you can get a side game or cash game great for students in around 100e a nite give or take...i also find im much better at readin people from dealing although wen im dealin i can read people easy but wen i play..well thats a diff story!!ha but def give it a go i also no some professional dealers that make alot of money so its def worth it!

This is slightly off topic but still,

I am looking for a job at the moment and one of the options is as a dealer in a card room, for those who are experienced in the area would working at some of the tournies like pokerevents be better(more profitable for the time put in) or getting a job in one of the cardrooms?

I ask which would be most profitable cos I still want to have time to play poker and im not quite good enough to go pro just yet! Maybe next week!

    Nice one!

a few of my mates from college (shoutman incl.) have dealt a tourny or two for Shortstack in Waterford and Drogheda and they all say its great, its an enjoyable job and get paid well... as part-time job goes this would be great...

Well I do it 2 nights a week on average to keep me going through college and I found it great, I can on a good week get over €200 for it. It is something I enjoy doing and I don't go in dreading work and things can fly by. I remember doing the big one in CityWest in January and did a 16 hour shift on the Saturday but it just flew by, now that wasn't to say it wasn't tiring as it was but still had great fun.
I would imagine doing something like I do with say Pokerevents(who I am with) maybe your better option as you don't commit yourself in the way you would if you tried for a casino but if you really feel up for it the casino would be better practice long term I would imagine but never worked in casino myself so can't really say.

As for training, well you play regurally so your already over 50% of the way there and you know rules etc, so only need to learn to riffle which isn't all that hard, half an hour of that and you should be competant enough then with a bit of practice it will just become 2nd nature.

    Good luck!

You've heard most of the pro's about dealing. However, it does have its con's. I deal 2-4 nights a week, usually till the early hours. I've been awake through the night...not because I was dealing last night, but because my body clock says so. I was suppose to go out last night...but I slept in!!! My social life has been close to non existent because of dealing. You're usually awake when everyone is asleep, so unless you play alot online or enjoy infomercials and euronews, your nights off can be quite boring. When you are dealing, you're usually itching to play. My back kills me when I am dealing. Thats more to do with the ****ty stools we've to use at the moment though. To counter all this though, I make 150-200 a night and its good craic. I really don't know if I'll ever be able to 9-5 job, if it comes to it; because, despite what I've said, its the best job I've had so far.

How do you go about getting a job dealing? Do they train you or something? It'd be the same hours with better pay and more interesting than my current job.

Thanks for all the advice guys much appreciated. I might try and go down the tournament route. How does one go about getting in contact with the guys from poker events?
