What sort of gloves do you use and where do you get them?

Is there any particular make you think is best for training/fighting etc?

I use Rogue gloves, they're pretty good.

Personally I don't think that any MMA gloves are great for training

I use Rogues as well. Like most gear, I think you can spend as little or as much as you want. Rogues are about €50 a pair after exchange and shipping so they're not going to break the bank, then again you can get a pair of Fairtex for nearer the €100 or a pair of fingerless bag mitts for €25.

I'd agree with Tim though there's not too many you can use training. It's not like striking where you can vary between 10oz for fighting and 14/16oz for training. I know there's the extra padded ones you can get but they look awkward to me. I'd prefer to ease off the contact.

Thanks for taking the time to reply Tim!

When i said training i didn't mean strikes, I meant grappling. I hope to begin training soon and i imagine the dynamics of training grappling and subs with gloves off and gloves on is hugely different, especially when trying to dig in underhooks etc!!!!! Sorry i didn't make the question clearer!

Best of luck in your fight!

It is if you use big gloves alright but I've never noticed that much of a difference when using MMA gloves. A little but nothing major.

Why bother with gloves if not striking ? -

Well i'm out in Sandyford so i was gonna head down to Fianna. Be a good test for Pearse and Drummo's ability as coaches! :D

And loz, i was assuming that like any sport it is best to practice your grappling under the same conditions you will be going for in the cage/ring?

Mouth guard, groin card, mma gloves?

Else you might be introducing something into a fight that you may find you are not used to or uncomfortable with.

So i assume we can see you on a fight card soon then ? - You wearing shoes also ? and training 5 minute rounds ?

You'll hardly notice the gloves - so i wouldnt bother unless your gonna be hitting

I'd also save the assumptions till you've actually started training.............

I see where your coming from dude, but until i start training all i can do is "assume" and seeing as every sport i have ever competed in had or has me training in the circumstances i would be competing, or as close to it as they can get, that would just be the way i would train MMA i suppose! :D

And eventually yes, i would like to fight, once again though i'm pretty much a creature of habit. Make the changes as soon as possible so just get used to things I suppose.

Anyway, cheers for the advice about the not needing the gloves man!

Don't talk to me about chicken wire. I'm a country boy, spent every summer working on my uncles farms.....between fencing and herding I could be in the goddamn Eagles!!! :D

By far the best gloves for strikes are harbinger. I hadnt used them in years and used mine a couple of days ago and they are really good. Loads of protection. That said, I did collapse my knuckle through them.

I think fairtex are the best for Grappling and MMA in general. When Drummo or I fight we use surgical tape rather than wraps. This allows better grip and better protection. At every Ring of Truth so far other fighters have begged, borrowed or stolen our tape.

The quality of Fairtex products is unserpased. For GLoves and pads they are my brand of choice.

    Peace

Originally I thought Harbs were best ....
    A) because at the time I thought the all black design looked cooler and
    B) I thought the closed palm design was more functional in a grappling situation.

Stokes and Drummo insisted Fairtex were better and after using them for a couple of training sessions I saw the light!

The bindings NEVER open and after ya get used to them i don't think many people would go back. And anyway you can get Fairtex in all sorts of cool colours these days.

Now if I could only find someone's face to put them on!!!

where does one buy these fairtex gloves you speak off.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 757 ✭✭✭FiannaGym.com

You can get fairtex from http://www.mightyoak.co.uk/alsgym/Shop/GlovesGrapple.htm

    or from

    http://www.fairtexgear.com/html_documents/gear/gear_item.asp?p_id=163

If you ship from the US you will be charged duty.

They can be a bit difficult to get on and off, but big deal once on they are the best functioning gloves. At least "wew at Fianna" (Darkwarrior, drummo and me) do haha.

    Peace
