Network Mapping Problem.

The hard drive failed on one of the PC's here in the office. I managed to get it back up and running, bad sectors repaired etc. and had to reinstall XP. This all went fine and no data was lost, XP seemed to install perfectly. It logs onto the network no problem, but for the life of it, it won't map any of our shared network drives! I have reinstalled the netwok several times, taken the computer off the network and back on, but it just won't map any of my shares. Any ideas?

It is only showing Microsoft Terminal Services and Web Client Network within my Entire network, no sign of Microsfot Windows Network.

What exactly do you have under your "Local Area Connection" General

Do you have "Client for Microsoft networks" "file and print" etc

    list please

Try turning off simple file sharing?

Yeah, have Client for MS Networks, QoS Packet Scheduler, File and Print etc. and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP. I have all my DNS's in and we're running DHCP so no specific IP.

hmmm interesting. Try loging in a domain admin and map the drives

Is it you cant map the drive or you can map a drive but dont see anything

Did you install any form of Firewall like zone alarm or norton or anything like that? Could be blocking the network.
Can you ping other computers?? Hell are you sure you are even connected?? If you are using DHCP but something is blocking you getting the correct ip address etc then you are probably not looging on to the network. Hard to say...

So main question,.. any firewall software at all?
Oh and is this a duplicate thread? im sure i posted an answer to this question

[edit]it is a dupe.. here is what i posted in the other one since this seems to have more responses.
Is microsoft windows network actually installed in the network list? You would think it is.. how about of you just pick a computer name then go start-run type \\computername press ok.. if it logs on it will be very strange indeed.

I tried stopping simple file sharing and that didn't do the trick I'm afraid.

I have logged in as admin, and as with the user, it will map but folders are empty (sorry didn't explain that very well in initial post).

It logs onto the network fine, I can connect to email, internet etc. I can ping any machine on the network. I have no firewall sw on it. I haven't installed anything, bar a reinstall of XP since the HDD crash. It's a really strange one I know.

    Reinstall "Client for Microsoft Networks"

I wonder could it be something with the old PC image / name being stuck in AD somewhere.

Are you in a Domain, Can you check AD

Sorry scratch all that you post while I was answering a call :)

I've tried reinstalling Client for MS networks a few times, I've also taken the machine off the domain and back on, reinstalled the nic and removed all networking sw altogether, to no avail.

Sorry about multiple posting Saruman, thanks for joining this one.

Make sure that File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks is
installed and enabled for the local area connection.

Are you getting any error at all when you try to connect ?

Has the XP firewall been enabled ?

Try using net view \\computername and see if you can get an error

Also make sure you dont have Internet Connection Sharing or Internet Connection Firewall enabled

I have file and printer sharing enabled.
I'm not getting any error when mapping, it just maps and open blank.
    XP firewall is disabled.
I can see the server or any other machine via net view.
And internet sharing and firewall are disabled.

I'm totally baffled. I have been at this for a day and a half at this stage.

    Desperate measures now :)

    try running Ipconfig/flushdns
    then
Giving the Comp a Static IP addresss
    reboot
Then giving it a dynamic address

Also try enabling the IPX protocol, i know its not used etc but give it ago
(something to do with the way it refreshs)

Also try renaming the PC. & incase it is having issues with with your AD.

Are you a peer to peer workgroup setup? Or are you actually using AD (active Directory) as in logging on to a domain server.

Sorry just to verify you are in a Domain ?

If its a workgroup, Make Sure netbios over Tcpip is enabled

Yeah I have AD, and have tried renaming and reattaching PC to no avail.

Just trying a static IP on it now, with IPX installed. I'll keep you posted.

Make sure that when you reinstaled windows that the 'WORKGROUP' and Sever Domain is the same as the server or the other PC's.

Do a search in 'computers and People' for all by using '*'. If noting shows up you are not on the network.

Go to Control panel/System/computer name, now make sure that workgroup and/or Domain name is the same as the other PC's.

Do the search again, hopfully this will have worked.

    Otherwise Dont know.

OK, tried giving static and dynamic IP, and it logs on to network no prob, but again no mapping. It is now asking me for a username and password when mapping, but my admin credentials don't connect it.

The domain and workgroup are exactly the same as others on the network. The funny thing is it does attach to the network, it just doesn't map!!

The PC has been renamed, all protocols and clients have been reinstalled, all settings appear to be fine. I have 20 other PC's and laptops with idential credentials connecting to the network and server shares fine, this one is driving me mad, and up until the day before yesterday it was fine!

What's really strange, and I mentioned it briefly earlier, whan you go into Entire network you can only see Terminal Servers and Web Client Networks, there is no MS Network.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,389 ✭✭✭✭Saruman

password eh... can you confirm you are logging on to the domain itself? Not sure of your technical level but if you are not used to setting up domains you might not know this.
When you join a domain and restart. If you just log on as normal you are NOT logged on to the domain.. you need to select the domain from the log on drop down menu.. this is not automatic...

So can you just confirm you are actually logging on to the domain and not the local PC?

By the way you said you tried reinstalling client for microsoft networks.. can i ask did you uninstall it first? And the reinstall it?

Open up services.msc and make sure Remote Procedure Call (RPC) is running and just as importantly Computer Browser and also Network connections

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 31 Kasparov

Yeah, when I log it back onto the domain I add it with administrator username and password, so it is definitly connecting to network.

When Uninstalling Client for MS networks I just removed it from the properties of the connection, restarted, readded, is this sufficient?

RPC is running as is Network connections, but computer browser wasn't, I was surprised it wasn't, but when restarted it didn't make a difference.
