67/68 Mustang Fastback as daily driver

    hey all

are you able to drive a classic as a daily driver over here with classic car insurance and tax.

do they confine you to certain mileage?
if i paid €20,000 + on a car i would want to drive it not leave it in the garden, while i drive something else that literally doesnt get your juices flowing.

i dont have far to drive to work i would want to drive it.
if i could not drive something like this i would never really be able to buy one.
its the only Classic that has really killed me when looking at it.
even worse they is a guy i see around Clondalkin driving one. its a 65/66 version little different in styling to the one i want but still love it. sounds great.
I am constantly on Paul_CCI website dreaming of what could be.
he has some really nice looking fastbacks at the moment

anyway sort of getting off track does anyone know if you can drive this daily

    Thanks

Most policys limit you to a certain milage(I'm on 4000), however I think that you can talk to first ireland about your car as a primary policy. If you have another car as your daily driver you may be able to get your milage increased.

Mine is for weekend/summer/holidays only, its fairly heavy on fuel and I don't like to run it into the ground as a daily driver, I've seem a few stangs getting the guts driven out of them arond Dublin recently  .

My policy is 4k also I think, I'd love to use mine as a daily but my fear would be it would get wrecked. It's a 33 year old car made of steel, it rusts very easily, already after about 7 months I've noticed some rust patches getting bigger.Unfortunatly mine is kept undercover outside, I wouldn't recommend that.
In saying that, it's a joy to drive, mines a 72 coupe, my preference would have been a 67/68 fastback untill I saw a 69, but I would settle for any of them. I'd say go for it, if it's raining you can leave it at home, you only live once. Maybe you could meet up with us next time we're meeting and have a close look and maybe a spin.

why would you want to drive that for day to day driving petrol alone would kill your pocket

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,119 ✭✭✭mustang68

    Why not?

If you can afford the petrol, then as the DeLorean slogan goes:

    "Live the Dream"

Yes their heavy on petrol, but believe it or not driven calmly their every bit as economical as some of the modern big cars out there. The BMW jeep, M5 is it, aparently does 18 to the gallon.Thats progress for you, Mine would do close to that and it's a 5.8 V8 and 33 years old.

    hey Dubtom

yeah sound just let me know next time u meeting up will try to get out.
i just bought a house few months ago just driving 99 sonata like the car but obviously not a mustang.
i'd say the fuel on it would be something serious alright but right now just dont have the money.

why is it you only think of these things when your older 26 now and when you are so smashed just going onto the net your paying off bill upon bill
    takes the feckin piss
if i was to get i would only get a 67/68 more cause of the styling on the back.
lines on it are just sweet. but i expect its goona be a while before i can get one of these. just a dream at the moment, but will always be keepnig an eye out you never know lotto. it could happen to me.

    thanks for all replies

did anybody on here ever get ur insurance company calling out to see how many miles u done in a year:D id be more worried about some asrool breaking it up,if ur looking for a daily driver a 10k mustang would be good enuf,ud pick one up in the states for even less than that,,

I agree, Fastbacks command the biggest prices, GS was selling one recently, a
68' coupe for 8 grand, that really was a bargain basement price.I dont think you'd get one in the US shipped for that price. For me the pleasure is the V8, it would be nice to have a fastback but I'll settle for my coupe untill that lotto win.

dubtom i know for a fact,u would buy and ship a good mustang, and clear duty etc etc for less then ten grand,,dont let the price of classic cars in this country fool u,:D :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

X5 and im guessing your talking about thr 4.4 not the 4.6 which is worse

M5 now there's a beast 507bhp at the touch of a screen :D wonder what it gets MPG

Difference is the 2 cars mentioned here can go round corners as well which is a nice feature in a car.

Well the car is gone now, but it needed a lot of work. For a daily driven condition coupe i'd still expect 10-12k for a decent car. It was a nightmare trying to sell that car as most of the people didnt have a clue about them and to them it was "a mustang" and that's where their knowledge ended

the old story of american cars:rolleyes: straight line heros:rolleyes: i put edelbrok high performance shocks, and two inch drop, hardened coils on the 69camaro:D it still wont go around corners,:D :D ,i think il weld the swing arm to the sub frame:eek:

i have to agree with u,i sold the 72 chrysler on saterday, but had a number of time wasters up for a day trip, are u buying another yank:confused:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 691 ✭✭✭gs39t

I dont want to SEE another yank tank for at least another ten years  I've had my fill for now. My advise to anyone is if your even considering buying one, read up and know everything BEFORE you view any cars. And dont make the owner a stupid offer, thinking about 50 people before you havent tried the same thing.

Whats this facination with going around corners, dont you realise that you are supposed to go around ar se first ala 70's hit shows like starsky and hutch.:D
Sorry to hear you had a negative expierance GS, funnily enough though, you didn't mention it needed THAT much work earlier, you old so and so.:p

Can't complain about the cornering on mine, handels fairly well. Much better since I stripped out the powered steering, heavy, but you have a better feel for it and a lot more control.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,037 ✭✭✭shagman

Yeah you can insure a classic as a daily driver, I do just that. First Ireland are the only ones to do it and costs me €854 a year limited to 10'000 miles for a 72 scimitar 3Ltr V6 includes breakdown assistance and a few other extras. I'm 36, no claims but bugger all NCB either.Expensive yeah, but it saves me the embarassment of being seen in eurobox.

see how good it is when u drop the boot, half way round the corner, saying that ponys are good at jumping hedges.just put on a 600 4 barrel carb = 4 wheel steering, good old B f tyres and pooo roads

Here's a couple a little closer to home, not Mustangs, but hey..
    http://classic.cbg.ie/Classic_detail.asp?CBGID=420131&ID=686235&NumPics=2&Make=Chevrolet&Model=Corvette&frmFilter=

    http://www.buyandsell.ie/browse.php?quicksearch=corvette&textopt=all&imageField.x=15&imageField.y=6
Ignore the swift, obviously. I know nothing about vettes, are these good prices.

I've just realised it's the same guy selling all three, A corvette dealer perhaps.
