Recently started to commute to work via Train..fed up bringing my big bulky laptop with me. I want to purchase a smaler compact one - Will be used entirely for work (programming) and no game play....battery life is important also...Anyone give me any advice on which models to choose..

You could look at one in the Sony Vaio range. Small, more expensive, but good.

some nice ones here -> http://www.infosyncworld.com/news/n/6555.html - but expensive

Was in Dixons yesterday (Jervis) and they had some very portable laptops for about a grand (HP i think)

hp nc4010 owner here and cant praise it enough. I get a good 4-6 hours life out of the battery and the 12" screen is amazing. My bro who is a programmer doin his phd, thinks its great too. He uses it for some of his work stuff as his huge dell yoke takes much longer. They are pricey but well worth it in my opinion. 3yr guarantee as standard-i rang up to ask what battery life i should be getting, they asked'well what are u getting now?' i said bout 3 with no wifi on. They sent out a new battery and restarted the 3yr guarantee. I didnt even have to ask them for a new battery or kick up a fuss. It was the best customer service iv ever had!

I was in PC world today marvelling at some of those tiny portable laptops. If you are not looking to get an absolute powerhouse then I'd say they are perfect fro protable use.

You should have a look at the dell mobility range - the inspirson 630m is only 749 at the moment. It only comes with 256mb of ram but you can get a gig of ram for 130euro from here http://www.memory-configurator.com/DELL/Inspiron/Inspiron-630m.html
