    hey all,
got a NEC ND-6650 dvd writer from komplett (http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=311102)

installed the drive fine onto a Iqon Celeron 2.6Ghz 768MB RAM. booted in and the Hardware Config Wizard asked to search for the driver. There was no disk with the drive and the Config Wizard did a search on the net but didn't find anything. Drive is coming up(using WinXP pro BTW) in the Device Manager under a group with a yellow question mark and the drive is here, "DVD+-RW ND665". in explorer i can't see it either. checked the BIOS and it can't see it.

could it be a compatibility issue with the Iqon laptop? seen this as well. might be best to send it back to komplett and get the Sony drive they offer.

any ideas before i send it back?

There are no jumpers on the drive are there? There is not usually on laptop drives but you never know! You need to get it working in BIOS before I'd worry about windows. Have you tried going in and rescanning for drives etc. If you but in a bootable CD will the system boot off it?

Its a worry that the system is looking for drivers for a DVDRW it shouldn't unless there is nome issue with the I/O interface.

thanks wingnut. tried all that you said there last nite. bios is saying NONE for the CDROM, etc. in windows if i do a scan, the hardware config wizard still comes up and can't find the driver. its seems weird that it sees the new hardware but can't get the driver alright.

going by the forum i put in above, it might be a compatibility issue. after doing a google there were quiet a few posts relating to problems with the drive on different systems. I'll see what komplett also say. I sent them a mail earlier this morning since there phone line doesn't open until 10am!

oh ya, there doesn't seem to be a jumper on it. just had to do a straight swap and change the screw bracket from the old one to this one.

the laptop DVD writer is by default MASTER. there are no physical jumpers as this is internally set in the firmware. I have to get a "Slimline CD to Desktop IDE Adaptor", connect to a Desktop machines IDE cable and flash the firmware from a bootdisk DOS to change the setting to SLAVE.

you'd think this would be mentioned in the product description or something! a lot more hassle than i bargained for.

might as well disable the region restrictions on it as well when i'm at it!

www.cdfreaks.com seems to be a reasonably good site for drive information and also www.rpc1.org (for region enhancments, lets say!)
