Airlines losing €2bn due to lost luggage

    21 March 2006 10:03
New figures have indicated that the air transport industry around the world is losing €2 billion a year because of lost luggage.

A Geneva-based IT company, SITA, which helps track baggage information, estimates that 30 million bags go astray annually and over 200,000 of them are stolen or lost permanently.

In its annual review, SITA said that the problem of mishandled suitcases is worsening as airport congestion grows, turnaround times get tighter and security regulations are tightened up.

However a company spokesman said owner and baggage are reunited over 99% of the time.

SITA, working with the international airline body IATA, has developed an industry-standard system for hunting down lost and mishandled baggage.

Known as World Tracer, it is used by 391 airlines and ground handling companies around the world.

Based on data gathered by the system, SITA said that in 2005 the most common single reason for baggage delay was mishandling during transfers, which occurs in 61% of cases.

SITA found that it takes an average of 31.2 hours from the time the bag is reported missing to when it is found and restored to its owner.

Although I will say that the amount of luggage that goes missing is inexcusable, I will say this ->
estimates that 30 million bags go astray annually and over 200,000 of them are stolen or lost permanently.

That means that 29,800,000 bags that are lost are returned to the owner. Thats not bad going at all. :)
