Do you think the new developments occuring in the City, can be facilitates in terms of retail, surely some of the shopping potential is at it's limit level, there are already many buildings in the city centre which can't be sold/let.
    (Sorry for a serious post)

Oh Sorry, this is actually my first ever visit to the Waterford Forum. It's nice but I could see it getting a bit out of control, now Mike's gone.
Be careful not to give new info in your FTL tags, just new percpectives, if you get me.In actual fact I think you should swap your FTL tag and main post, for that last post.

There is huge demand for retail units in the city centre. But the demand is for much larger retail units than exist in the main. Little shops go empty, because none of the "high-street" chains can use them. Developments are needed to provide the larger units that the current streetscape just can't provide. Personally I think they should rebuild a few streets, but that's not going to happen. So it has to be shopping centres.

The sort of retail that would be attracted by larger developments are the likes of Debenhams, Marks & Spencers, HMV, Waterstones, etc. Some retail, such as the Sony Centre and PC World, currently on the Cork Rd., would probably have moved in to the city centre if the retail units had been there. These developments ensure that primary retail remains in the city centre where it belongs.
