memory for laptop

    what should u look out for when getting more memory for a laptop? i have a dell with 512mb so how would i upgrade that to 1024mb and how much would it cost roughly?

    whats the model of laptop as you might need to loose 1x256 and add say a 1gb or 1x512 module if the memory doesn't have to be paired

    www.shop4memory.com is also another site to try. Based in Kildare. Very competitive.

    As regards upgrading. You need to find out how many RAM slots your laptop has (normally 2) and how many are free. You might find that your 512 is made up of 2 256Mb modules. In which case to upgrade to 1024 Mb you will have to either buy one 1Gb module and lose one of the 256Mb, or lose both and replace with two 512Mb.

    If you only have one 512MB in place currently, then you simply add a second 512Mb module.

    CPU-Z will show you what RAM you currently have.

    If you can, put as much memory into the laptop as possible - 2Gb if it will fit. This will make the machine run faster and the battery last longer as windows won't page out to disk as much especially if you run a memory cache optimizer such as cacheman.

    Well depends on the spec of laptop. If it's quite old then adding huge amounts of RAM will be a waste as the processor, graphics card, hard drive might prove to be bottlenecks.

    Also for the price of 2Gb RAM you might as well consider buying a new laptop.

    1Gb is more than enough, espec for a laptop.
