    Hey,

Got a laptop at Xmas, and since day one I've been having problems with turning it on and off ?

When its booting it sometimes Hangs on the black screen just after the "Loading Windows XP" and nothing can be done except to remove the power and battery to kill it and get it to start again.

Same with shutting down, It'll either Hang on the "Windows is Shutting Down" Screen or the "Preparing to hibernate." The same as above applies, It'll just sit on that screen all day until the battery is either removed or runs dry. No combination of buttons will unlock it, nor will holding the power button.

Now its started to crash when coming back from Hibernation, and crash when the login screen appears but it only does it intermitently (spl?)?

    It's a Toshiba Sattelite Pro, 1.7ghz Centrino, 1Gig ram, XP Pro SP2

got any usb/pcmcia etc devices attached, if so remove them and try booting up and shutting down,

this next one is tedious, when windows is loaded up,
    goto the run
    type in "msconfig"
on the services and startup tab, disable/uncheck all boxes
enable say 5 at a time and reboot to see if its one of them that's causing the problem.

try reseating the harddisk, ie taking the harddisk out check for any marks on the pins, then reinserting the harddisk

    update bios, video drivers etc.....

if its like that form day one bring it back to where you got it from let them have a look.

If you got it at Christmas why not ring toshiba and take out your frustration!

It's nothing to do with Toshiba - it's windows. Backup your files and reinstall windows. Try to avoid SP2 where possible. Alternatively, bring it back and get yourself a Mac :)

Of course it has something to do with Toshiba. He bought it less than three months ago and it isn't working. Under the terms of the Sale of Goods an Services act, it is not performing as advertised, therefore he can get it fixed or have it replaced.

Telling people to avoid SP2 and then recommending a Mac proves you are talking through your USB port.
