    Hi,

I'm thinking of selling my Sony VAIO. Need a slightly smaller laptop.

    Pentium M740 1.73
    1 X 512mb
    80GB
    802.11 b/g
    15.4" WXGA X-Black LCD
    Double Layer DVD_+RW
    NVIDIA GeForce Go6200
    Win XP Pro Licenced.

Less than 1 year old, mint condition, original box + discs&manuals etc.

    So whats it worth?

    Many Thanks

    Kevin

How much is an equvalent new dell worth now? Then halve that.

I'd be wary enough of buying a Sony second hand. I got an S1XP the year before last for over €2000. The ac adapter went (it had had an easy life) and the DVDR went out of warranty. I came in possesion of a new Dell laptop DVDR and thought happy days. Opened up the laptop fitted the drive working away untill.... I went to put it back together. The sony uses really unusal drives 2mm thinner than other laptop drives and the thing physically wouldn't fit. Cheapest I could track one down was €350, not worth it when something else could go.

I realise this is one story and many people will have had no trouble with Sonys. Two friends work at the PC World tech center and say they are forever getting Sonys back but everyones got their own opinion. Loved the design and portablity though, it was a 13.3" screen. I only use it to surf the net around the house now and do my work on a Dell 9400, which is the other extreme size wise!

It was the first and last laptop I bough without an extended three year warranty. My previous Dell laptop saw a modem, motherboard and hard drive all replaced under warranty and that did get some abuse!

Kevin dublin - sound nice. Whats the model number, what warranty is left on it, whats the battery life like?

wingnut - PC World techs. Yes well...

I have a Sony Vaio for 2.5 years no real problems. Probably sell it soon before the 3yrs warranty is up. Friend has one for going 4 years no problem. At the end of the day you can lucky or unlucky with a machine. Most laptops are made by the same 3 or 4 companies and simply rebranded.

    Hi,

At max. there's a few months left on the warranty.

    Its a VGN-FS295VP

I get about 2hrs from the battery, with Wi-Fi on & screen bright.

"Most laptops are made by the same 3 or 4 companies and simply rebranded."

Huh that doesnt sound correct at all. However I'd be interested to hear your reasoning.

Where'd you get that notion?, it simply isn't true. A more succinct thing to say would be most laptops are comprised of similar parts (e.g. Intel processors, Corsair budget RAM, Seagate hard drives), the only difference being the logo on the hood..

Anyway, off hand I can think of Fujitsu-Siemens, Acer, Sony, Apple, Dell, Compaq, HP, Alienware etc...

To the OP, I'd say you could sell that for €900-€1000 to the 'right' person.. :D

    Actually hes not entirely wrong.

Fujtisu siemens, NEC\PackardBell, Acer and iQon have used models produced by FIC and Gericom. In many many cases the same models too, they are simply rebadged. I think Dell have used them on occasion too.

Sony generally have their own stuff, to an extent, espcially logic boards although not directly made or designed by them (usually subcontracted). Thats part of the problem. Overpriced, proprietary not very reliable and very expensive to replace. Part of this is their need for more compact boards to suit their smaller laptops.

Sony laptops definatley have their fans out there though, and I think you'd fetch €900 rom the right person.

My niece has a Gericom Laptop 15" desktop replacement, from Aldi, and I have a Sony 16". They are pretty much identical except Sony screen and keyboard are much better. The chassis though a different colour is exactly the same, ditto the motherboard. Spec is almost identical. The other difference is that the Gericom has 4 USB whereas the Sony has 3 one being replaced with a useless Sony Memory Stick reader. I noticed this before on other laptops where their chassis are very similar. Most people won't notice as the chassis colour and keyboard are different, as is the branding. Happens a lot in manufactering. Nothing unusual about it.

How much would a Sony TR1MP subnote book fetch:

    im-pcg-tr1mp.jpg

    10.6' Screen
    768 Ram
    30GB HDD
    "B" Wifi
    2 x USB2
    1 x Firewire
    Win XP
    Onboard camera
    2nd Battery
    Semi-Hard Vaio Case/.

    S.

    This is correct ,
Heres a link explaining it all ,

    http://www.gen-x-pc.com/laptopmanu.htm

Most are rebadged from Taiwanese ODM's ( original design manufacturers ) not sure which one , but one of the companies in the link has a whopping 55% of the laptop market , and none of them has the original companies name on em.
