Some class pix there, Captain P does it for me though.

There are some weird interpretations of Still Life there. Hope that's reflected in the voting!

yeah... i am slightly torn on this. But I'm afraid i'm going to sick to the classical meaning of "still life" and not still life (if you catch my meaning) as a lot of people have interpreted it. Which is a pity because it means i wont be considering some really nice pics...

Thank you, i agree about the voting. There's a lot of trees etc, which are lovely pics but just aint still life really..

I was torn between a few of the others.eventually choosing coolboardr.

Both, for Dermot Morgan to obviously have done it in the first place and for sinecura to have brought it up and made me laugh.

Both legends.....both have lovely bottoms.....Im presuming.

    Anyway.

gah, now I'm going to have to watch the whole fr ted box set later on. Curse you both, infedils!

    thanks! :D

There are some good ones alright, and some fairly *cough* 'interesting' interpretations of still life. It was CoolBoardr who got my vote in the end.

Exactly the same for me! But I REALLY love that pic of roo_photo too much... The colours, the textures, the shapes, the lighting... LOVED it! :)

I give roo_photos the vote as well.....classic, maybe even a touch cliche, but very well done.

Quite surprised with one of the other contenders tho.......I just don't see it...

Thought things might have looked a bit different in round 2, but meh! One or two shots I think should have been in top 3... well done to everyone anyway, esp Coolboardr. And thanks for the votes, very happy!

hm.. I dont know if this system works too well.. i think we need to start thinking of new methods of voting..

Think away shrimp. Or are you annoyed that you only have 2 votes?

Critical as usual, and not very constructive.

How would YOU improve things Shrimp?

The current system was my suggestion and commented on by lots of people. Granted, the second round did not take place but a clear winner did emerge.

roo_photo should have been in top 3! :(

    Definately.

I think this one was a hard one. With a few people having a different perspective of still life..

My perspective was a Tree (it is life), and the winds were very low, so it was still, and the tree was situation on its own. - That was my perspective.

I seen a lot of people doing foods/veg/fruit.. but I was edging towards flower/plant/tree.

I didn't see the point in a second round when there was so clearly a winner in this one.

If anyone wants to design new voting systems for consideration, please do. Until someone comes up with something groundbreaking, this one is staying.

How about using the single tranferable vote system?

Voters can rank the photos then a droop quota of (photos/4)+1 can be applied. The lowest voted photo is eliminated, excess votes are transferred, and the process is repeated until the top 3 are decided. Obviously we would have to consider the problem of sequential exclusions (maybe by utilising a system such as CPO-STV or Sequential STV) but this system is by far the fairest.

Or we can just vote for our favourite photo. Whatever. :)

On a more serious note - maybe Shrimp is alluding to removing the photographers name on the photo to eliminate any bias?

Been there, done that. Quickly turns what should be a little bit of work into a huge honking admin job. Pain in the hole tbh. I don't know if it would make any difference whatsoever for some entrants; once people become accustomed to a persons style of photography it's not that hard to pick out from a group.

    slumped wrote:

That's why I said we, so we do it as a group? cos at the mo I don't have an idea, but maybe WE can think of something. So far there's been, I think, two suggestions since I made that post so it does show that there's an interest.

I do think that nameless entries would be a great idea, personally I feel that some ppl don't vote because they may not like the photographer. That's just my opinion but by the things some ppl say in other threads you can pick up on the fact that if it came down to it, they wont vote for the person if they don't like them. Which is ridiculous considering it's a competition for photographs, not photographers.

Anyways, at the moment I'm trying to think of some ideas for voting, but so far I think nearly all if not most suggestions that have been made have just be casted off as requiring too much work, which may very well be the case, but surely when a members becomes a mod, then they sign up for a certain amount of work. I can only imagine it taking about half an hour in total to set up the voting, which isn't much. So where's the problem?

For now, we'll just have to make do, and think of a new method.

    Thinking....

God that sounds awfully complicated to me!

I think we should keep it the way it is but make the pictures anonymous!* Then we can have a separate vote to see if we can identify Shrimp's picture so we know which one not to vote for!** :p

    *That was my serious answer
    **That's just a bit of banter :D

I thought about this before when voting in the first of the two round sessions. If I 'cheated' by peeking before voting and saw that my favourite already had enough votes to make it to the next round, I voted for a different one that deserved to be short listed. Obviously when the 2nd round is cancelled, this system makes no sense.

If you use the boards software you really only have two choices - pick one or multiple choice. If there's to be two round voting, I thought maybe the first round should be multiple choice - vote for the ones you like and not for the ones you don't. It doesn't matter how many you vote for - one person could vote for 6 of the pics and the next for only 1 - the difference between your likes and your dislikes is still only 1 vote. The top five get into the next round where you can then only vote for 1 as there's only one winner.

Anyway, the current system isn't working too badly - the best pictures are rising to the top.

I think the current system is working ok, only thing I could think of is to have it as an anon poll instead of public, then ppl would not be able to see who was ahead etc and would not be biased by that info, just vote for their FAV regardless of how well (or not) it was doing. ?? Just an idea.

Does that include setting one voting system at the start of judging and changing it half way through?

Yup, anonymous entries with the current voting system sounds good. Thanks to all for the positive feedback too.

Ohhh wait, as a newcomer I had better first indulge in the forum initiation ritual, before anybody will listen to me. Seems to consist of shrimp bashing, and gnawing on rymus's gonads...
**digs out bottle of industrial strength listerine, on second thoughts better make that bleach** Ewww I just can't do it  ...Shrimp would you mind if I just bashed you twice instead?

    HILARIOUS :)

I felt a little lost when I first stumbled in here too I must say, was a bit intimadating but... meh! Can't appear to be intimadated anyway, even if I am just a girl :) [just to clarify that, yes, there ARE girls on the internet]

    Hey.. how YOU doin? ;)

In case there are any further worried newb's out there, munching on my scrot isn't a prerequisite to posting on either the photo challenge or photography forum. Neither is Shrimp bashing. In fact I advise against both on hygiene grounds. One just never knows where that little fella gets to on a daily basis. Same could be said for the gonads.

^^^ I think this is a good idea as a "live" poll may affect the voting somewhat. I think having anonymous entries in conjunction with the above suggestion would be best.

Agree on 100%, anonymous entries and results hidden until the end would be by far the best way to do it.
