France forces Apple open iTunes - and the possibility of switching MP3 players

    Check out the above. It'd be great if other countries were to follow suit and force Apple to open iTunes up to other MP3 players.

    I've been thinking of getting a Creative player whenever my Mini dies - that shouldn't be too long given that I've dented it in a few places already.

    One of the most off-putting reasons for me at the moment not to switch away from Apple is that iTunes is great for user-friendlyness and choice of tunes, plus horror stories about other music download sites - like Sony's Connect are really discouraging. On top of that the confusion over format support etc between different players is enough to quash any interest I have in freeing myself from my iPod.

    It's not yet clear what international ramifications will come from the French situation. Apple might simply pull out of France, or simply make the change in France itself, although I'm not sure what the EU would have to say about that. We'll see...
