Actually looking for similiar info myself, dosent seem to be all that easy to find anymore for some strange reason.

Anyone have a link to the grants etc that can be utilised by the driver / passenger for the adaption to the vehicle?

    Hi,

Basically you are subject to relief of vrt and vat to teh following maximums:

    e9,525 for a driver
    e15,875 for a passenger
    e15,875 for a family member

The vehicle has to be either specially constructed or adapted and the cost of the adaptation must be 10% of the cost of the vehicle (minus the vrt).

There's a limit on engine sizes, 2,000cc for a driver and 4,000cc for the others.

You have to hold onto the vehicle for 2 years.

You need to get a letter of authorisation from the Central Repayments Office (submit form dd1) this can take a bit.

When u buy the car you present the letter of authoristaion to the dealer, which lets you buy minus vrt. Then once you've had the car converted you apply to the vat back submitting the invoces from the dealer and the conversion.

You should also be able to apply for excise duty on fuel and Motor Tax.

could you get a second hand adapted mpv for cheaper if you checked out some of the voluntary sites/ called around maybe someone could be of use? even some of the car sites might be of use? http://search.atomz.com/search/?sp-q=mpv&sp-a=000825a5-sp00000001

i found a list of companies that do adaptions, might be worth ringing around to get quotes http://www.enableireland.ie/posturalmanagement/suppliers.html#vehicle and http://www.enableireland.ie/posturalmanagement/caradaptation.html

Depending on the level of the adaption its not always worth doing it.
Assuming you're not putting a ramp in the car should hold its resale vaule pretty well for the two years you need to hold onto it, after which you can go for another new car.

But it all depends on your finances, but you'll still match the price on a new car against one secondhand (newish) with the vrt and vat removed. At least thats how I'm justifing it to myself.

Just a quick update on the car since I've found out about another dscount you can get when buying new.

If you're a member of the Irishwheelchair associate you can also apply for the fleet discount. This varies a bit depending on manufacturer, but should get you a few hundred back.

It might be worth at somepoint sorting out a sticky here with information of grants and benfits.
