    So Computer/Tech heads;
What new technologies/ innovations in the computing world are you most looking forward to seeing in the next five years?
What new technologies are on our way?

I ask this as i am interrested in reading about them but don't know where to start.

(FTL; "What new tech's coming out?")

I want to challenge MS to make an OS that works :) Id love to see some sort of a fold up laptop, that folds up into a matchbox.

Well they managed to get Windows XP on a Mac, so who knows what could happen

Mind you I don't understand why you would want to put XP on a Mac though

Notice that star, hmmm... scroll down the bottom of the page to see what the star is about

One thing I'd really love to see in the next few years is a solid-state flash-based Hard Drive.

Nothing blows worse than trying to run new games or new Windows on high settings with a lot of Virtual Memory on slow-assed magnetic hard drive. especially an older, smaller, and thus slower drive.

Magnetics are going by the wayside.

The casette tape is obsolete, so is the VHS.
    Floppies are nearly obsolete.
Zip drives at this stage belong in a museum.
Many pen-drive type Mp3 players also use flash memory.

Hard drives are next, IMO, or at least I hope.

    teh ps3 lol!!!!

Seriously though; I think a better windows OS should be interesting, and while I hope to move to mac once they make the intel switch over I'm sure I'll be using windows also.

WiMax (is that what it's called? The next gen of wlan that be picked up within a huge radius), should be interesting and maybe we might see Dublin City Council start up a free net service across the city centre, like some other big places across the globe (yeah, right!).

Yup, think so too. Probably will happen in steps, with a small 5-10G flash drive for the O/S, swap etc. and a 200GB+ disk drive for mp3s, video etc.

Also see wireless networking/home media center expanding, with the PC becoming a hub over (even faster!) broadband to radio & video. e.g. pandora. Harddrive DVDs are almost there as well e.g. kiss.

Nah... floppies are gone if you ask me

All new computers don't even have floppy drives any more

Remember once upon a time when all programs were on floppies... including games

    Windows Vista
    WiMax
Increased webification of things (Think uploading stuff to google so you can have it anywhere you go)
Streaming video to watch on iPod/PSP using WiMax
Obsoletion of magnetic media, and possibly optical discs (Although thats more then 5 years away)
High Definition programming/discs (Having got a new HD TV at home, cant wait for HD stuff to start)

I'd like to see broadband coverage for the people of Ireland. We are almost into the 2nd quarter of 2006 yet the majority of people living here use Dial-up to access the Internet, What a disgrace.

Hopefully in the future most people will have Firefox rather than IE, that would show Microsoft :)

It is my dream anyway. Let's hope it becomes reality.

    Petee:

Regarding streaming video to PSP/iPod over WiMax: With Sony's locationFree player, you can already do this to the PSP over WLan and WiFi hotspots. Not sure if the player's available in Europe yet, but I've seen it in action in Japan and it's pretty impressive!

    Smaller, cheaper flash-based hard drives.
Improvements in battery / power supply technology.

they are already around, though only on some high spec systems from fancy manufacturers, i think go-l.com had them calling it puram if memory serves me...

-The proliferation of DRM (like on blu-ray/HD-DVD) is going to make things interesting (in an annoying boring way)
    - I'd like to see if HDTV actually takes off or what. I'll say it'll be another while...
    - Hybrid flash RAM/magnetic HDDs seem to be on their way. It may still be a good while before 500GB+ flash RAM becomes remotely affordable though, so magnetic disks aren't dead yet!
    - Decent CMOS cameras (still and video) possibly taking over from CCDs
    - A total replacement to x86 architecture (it's about damn time!)
    - I dunno, turnips as a source of electricity
Zip drives at this stage belong in a museum
I think the correct word you're looking for is "bin" ^_^
I can't believe I was using that crap up until last year...

WiMax theoretically should be fairly soon. Irish Broadband have already enabled all of their masts in Dublin, and in other places, and Intel and someone else are releasing PCMCIA WiMax cards before the end of the year.

For me though it would be quantum computing, i may be waiting a while though.....
