The Edward Norton Thread

He is by far my favourite actor, the first film that I saw him in was American History x and was absolutely blown away.
Fearing that the proposal of a forum in his honour would get laughed away, I thought it fitting to set up a thread for him.

So what do you think of him, what is your fav Ed N film and why, Do you have any info/reviews on his upcoming/new(enough for me to have never seen) films:
    1. Motherless Brooklyn (2005) (announced) .... Lionel Essrog
    2. Pride and Glory (2007) (filming) .... Ray
    3. The Painted Veil (2006) (post-production) .... Walter Fane
    4. The Illusionist (2006) .... Eisenheim
    5. Down in the Valley (2005) .... Harlan
    6. Kingdom of Heaven
I think we should start from here and let the thread evolve in its own fluid motion.

Really liked him in Red Dragon but loved him in American History X. Just something about him that most actors don't have. The variation in roles is quite exceptional.

he really strikes me as a true actor, who can take on any role/challenge such a change from the majority of hollywood actors who only seem to strive under one typecast eg Robert Den Niro, Jim Carey etc.

(FTL;"He is a good actor not a good looking celeb poser")

Absolute legend.. he really goes go from strength to strength in his films!

From 'Primal Fear' to 'American History X' to 'Fight Club' to '25th Hour' all the way up to his more comical roles in films like 'Death To Smoochy' - he just is very diverse and as MrJoeSoap has already stated, the variation of these roles are exceptional to be pulled off seamlessly!

Definitely one of my favourite modern actors - along with Philip Seymour Hoffman and William H Macy.

yep.. I've always been a fan of his... a very likeable actor.

I think I saw him in Primal Fear first and he was very good in that.

He's made a lot of very 'hollywood' films though.. I'd like to see him do something more interesting.

EDIT: Philip Seymour Hoffman and William H Macy fan too!

    Where is the PSH tread?

Have you seen Love Liza? He got real leading man status in that one and he was amazing.. such a wonderfully funny and depressing film.

I thought he was brilliant in Fight club, rounders and american history x.
Also the one with de niro, is it the heist or something like that, set in french canada..... you know the one I mean....

Was there really a need for an FTL tag in that particular post?! :D

Briefly back to PSH, anyone else looking forward to M:I-3 based on 2 things: (1) JJ Abrams directing and (2) the fact that Philip Seymour Hoffman will be farking amazing in that bad-guy role.

His performance / dialogue in the trailer alone creeped the sh*t outta me - fantastic!

    Basquille the rules of the FTL tags are quiet clear, the lazy should never have to fend for themselves, and suffer the torture of a full post, regardless of content, to do so would cause huge unrest among my many lazy followers;

    yeah M:I3 sounds cool.

(FTL; "A scathing on the wicked Basquille for attacking your privelages, agree-ance on potential coolness of MI-3")

Hopefully not as much as the time he was set on fire in the wooden wheelchair in Red Dragon!

I thought he was the only good thing about "Along Came Polly" too, he was absolutely side-splitting. I'll never take another basketball shot without shouting "Ice-man" or "Let it rain!".

Change the order of those and hell yes! And I couldn't even sit through the others..

I can never get his performance in Happiness out of my head...

Edward Norton is so versatile and an excellent character actor. I love 25th Hour so much, and Death To Smoochie is wonderful, even though Robin Williams stole that show. American History X, he should have got an Oscar for that..

Someone told me he is going to be in an episode of 24 soon. Is this true or has it already happened?

Linky from a couple of days back!
Producers of hit TV show 24 are fiercely denying rumours they're set to replace the show's star Kiefer Sutherland with 'The Italian Job' villain Ed Norton.

Norton is reportedly in negotiations to replace Sutherland's Jack Bauer on the show in 2007.

A spokesman for 24 says: "We have no idea how this rumour got started. We are big fans of Edward Norton's work over here at 24. However, at this time, there are no plans for him to join the cast of 24."

[*]Kingdom of Heaven[/LIST]I think we should start from here and let the thread evolve in its own fluid motion.

He only has a small roll in this film as Baldwin IV 'the Leper King'. He spends the entire time behind a silver mask that hides his deformities. When I watched the film I didn't actually know Norton was in KoH so I spent the whole time going "that guys voice sounds really familiar!"

(btw by all accounts the real Baldwin never wore a mask and was crippled and blind for the last few years of his life , but thats hollywood for ya :) )

Yeah I sat through that whole film thinking "Man who is that? He's so familiar!!" Then just at the end I figured it out. It was a small part but he played it well.

I love the way everyone is carefully not mentioning "Keeping the Faith." That film is bad enough to cancel 10 of Edward Norton's good films. And the fact that he directed it too? Better make it 15.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 806 ✭✭✭Atrocity

Shoot me but I liked that as well!

It was a romcom with him and Ben Stiller and I watched it right through and enjoyed it.. Maybe it was because he was in it, it's hard to tell!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,326 ✭✭✭Zapp Brannigan

Oh I think I've seen that. Stiller was a jew and Norton played a catholic priest?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 806 ✭✭✭Atrocity

    yeah that's the one!

Hmmm, Red Dragon: a film with Edward Norton, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Anthony Hopkins, and a horror/thriller to boot. The perfect film?

Anyway, I love Norton. Who doesn't?

Haha, I just saw that he wrote the songs "The Friends Song" and "My Stepdad's Not Mean" from Death To Smoochy! Classic.

He is producing, wrote and will direct (and probably star in) Motherless Brooklyn? That should be good.

    Me.

It's not that he's a bad actor, just didn't like any of the films he's been in that I've seen. Hated Fight Club. American History X struck me as about as believeable as Bosco (maybe they could stamp out the right wing by putting all Klansmen washing towels with African Americans) and Death to Smoochy is just tripe of the highest order. The best thing about Red Dragon was that it's not as terrible as Hannibal.

I can't, it is so imho...

I should point out that he is good in American History X, and very good in Primal Fear. It's just the films...

    Death to Smoochie tripe?

I will say good day to you sir.

    Brilliant, very talented man.
I remember hearing that he went and spent a lot of time observing people who had [whatever mental disability] he was faking in The Score.
    t'was quite convincing.

I'd seen Fightclub before I saw American History X, I was amazed at the difference in his build between both films... I noticed the same thing about Nicolas Cage in some of his films aswell... they can both play wimps and bad-ass mofos really well IMO.

I thought the exact same thing with Norton, only I watched Red Dragon before American History X. Hard to believe its even the same guy.

Well I'm certainly glad I didn't see that.

I like Edward Norton, he's a fantastic actor, but I kinda think he's going down the old route where he's cast in a film just because he's Edward Norton, rather than because he can bring a certain character to life, if you know what I mean.

I do enjoy many of the films he's done. I loved Fight Club, American History X, The 25th Hour, and Primal Fear. I think they'll always remain some favorites of mine, reguardless of what Norton does in the future.

I think it is the speed of his voice, as well as teh sound that makes him stand out the most.

Yeah I am a big fan of Nortans as well. American History X remains one of my favourite movies. Fight CLub and Primal Fear are both excellent as well. He has great ability to play varying characters. Top class actor

Fight club, would be the film i'd choose, it's my favorite one to watch out of the films i'v seen him in.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,082 ✭✭✭lostexpectation

so what ya reckon to Keeping the Faith

I only watch it for Jenny Elfman who looked stunning in it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

You know, it's a pity about the whole ordeal with American History X. I'm sure we're all aware about how it wasn't the film Tony Kaye wanted to make, and he was quite angry and verbal about it. The annoying thing is, if he hadn't made such a fuss, and essentially got himself blacklisted, he could've more than likely got a special edition director's cut of the film. That I would've liked to have seen.
