I am a spectator in this prolonged family reunion
My invite an engraved airplane ticket
Left on an empty chair at the kitchen table
Where nobody eats dinner anymore

A TV tray lined up in front of the new fireplace
I observe the new dynamics that have sprung up
Like spring grass, so sudden and strange
After a season of frost and indifference

There are new favourites
Undertones of relation preference
Being framed every moment

Pondering an excursion to the CN Tower
Half-nomad, half-tourist in this new-world place
I become meteorologically obsessed
Like everyone else
And talk about the weather
Till I'm blue in the face

Canadian culture encapsulated
In my old grey winter coat
Somehow it still fits
Somehow it still gapes

My missing winter boots
More appropriate apparel
When navigating the
Slush and salt streets

Accented feelings on stand-by
In this time zone confusion

It turns out an airport
Is all we have in common
After carving the calender up into two weeks

So I clingfilm my expecations
While everyone else sleeps
Watch Dangerous Liasons on a mini-screen
Pocket the complimentary eye mask and socks
And touch down a little less green

Weak with the relief of indecision
Content in a life of in-between
The tug-of-war struggle for home
Over for another year
