I'm just listening to Sigur Rós's new version of their song "Hafsol". On it the bassist plays the bass line using a drum stick to tap the beat and then fretting as normal with his fretting hand. It sounds really cool. Add that to the violin bow + guitar combo and you get a lovely mix.

Any other weird techniques you know of?

Did you ever get a listen to Fred Frith? I have an old LP of his where he plays the whole LP unaccompanied on the guitar and not one second of it is "conventional". One of his many techniques has alligator clips attached to the strings at certain harmonics and basically I cant remember what else he did.... hammering, plucking with various implements, playing beyond the nut etc etc
    (not recommended)

Not recommended in terms of listening to it or in terms of doing it to your guitar? Or both?

well, its virtually unlistenable-to but I suppose you might pick up some techniques you could use yourself. AFAICR the album is called "guitar solos" or similar.

Check out this page. The little review makes it sound a lot better than I remember

I really like the sounds of that actually (I've a lot of "pure noise" albums here). Must order it at some stage.

Trace Bundy has got to be one of the better unconventional players I have seen. He rarely strums, most of his stuff has got weird capo set ups and tapping.

Hard to explain so ... clip... clip 2
