    Hello,

I have a media file that when I go to watch, it gets an error when attempting to download the codec, so im left with sound only....

I want to burn it onto a dvd so i can watch it on a television, but do i need the codec installed first or will it be ok when i burn it??

    Thanks

i'd be 99% sure you'll need the codec. to watch it on a tv it'll have to be converted to dvd format or some such thing and to do that it'll need the codec. looks to me like you're using windows media player to find the codec. in many years computing wmp has never found a codec for me, one of may reasons i don't use it.

    get these:
    http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm
    http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

the first is just about every codec you'll ever need along with its own media player so you can dump wmp

the second analyses avi files to find which codecs are needed to play it. you probably won't need it though because k-lite will probably have it already

Odds are it is just an Xvid file, just install the XviD codec and try playing it again in WMP.

If your DVD player plays Divx there would be no reson to convert back to DVD as this take for ever.

Also, when you download the codec. Why dont you (if you can) plug direct into the TV and use the VLC player (This will play almost everything with no codex problems)

No problem, if you want to watch it on your TV you (assuming you don't have a MPEG 4 capable DVD player) will need to convert it from MPEG 4 to MPEG 2 which is the format DVD's come in.

XviD is an implementation of the MPEG 4 ASP specification so is DivX and a few others etc.

It is a commercial program but I find CovertXToDVD does the best job at converting MPEG 4 files to MPEG 2 at least compared to Nero, I think there are a few similar freeware programs around but I cant say I have tried them.

the k-lite codec pack includes xvid among many others. you might as well install it so you'll never have a codec problem again

I "personally" consider the K-lite pack to be bloatware too much stuff installed with a lot of overlap installing codecs which support formats already supported by another codec in the pack.

Sure some people like it & I can understand its usefulness to people not familiar with video codecs but all I need is ffdshow which does the job for the vast majority of videos (& audio) especially all the variations of MPEG 4 ASP.

I do also use CoreAVC because it is better at MPEG 4 AVC [H.264] than ffdshow performance wise with Purevideo for MPEG 2 content but that's about as far as it goes.
