Have a D50 I am now looking for some sort of tripod for
slow shuttter speed shoots. Want something portable
and small for when I am travelling any advice welcome ?

Had a look on Ebay and there is too many different
types to choose from. So first hand experiences
    most welcome.

    Regards
    Kevin

You really need to give a budget. The lighter and smaller they are, the more expensive they are.

Very nice. I had wondered why there weren't things like that on the market. Good oul Manfrotto to prove they are on the market.

There's a Hama one in Argos for €25 which for the money is not too bad and its fine/sturdy enough for the camera with with the normal small lenses like the 18-70 etc.

Just a tip - you might need the remote control for the D50 for taking tripod shots. You can use the self-timer but(if it's like the D70s) is has to be set for every shot and becomes a bit of a pain.

    I bought one of these:

Got it Gunn's - bring your camera with you & check out the various tripods on offer. I think it was about €75 (got it last year).

    Hi,

With that budget, I'd probably go for a Manfrotto monopod. Tripods in that price range really aren't going to be very good, and while they'll do for a while, you'll probably eventually find yourself dissatisfied. If you take 3 properties of a tripod to be cheap, light, and solid, it's reasonably easy to get 2 of those properties, but next to impossible to get all 3.

    That said :

I have a Velbon Sherpa 250 and I'd been wavering between this and the Manfrotto 718(they're around the same price). I found the Velbon to be a bit more solid, but as I've used it, I'd still like something more solid again, and am dreaming of getting a carbon fibre tripod at some stage, but that'll have to wait! for the moment the Velbon serves pretty well.

If you're in Dublin, do go into Gunn's and have a chat with them. They're lovely people, and will give you good impartial advice, and if they have the Manfrotto 718 at €75 it's probably as good a bet as you're likely to find for a tripod.

Maybe I'm being stupid here, but can't I just let down one leg of my tripod if I want to use it as a monopod?

Edit: Sorry, didn't realise this thread was so old.
