The above has just stopped working. When a CD is inserted, you can hear it "revving up" a little bit and then slowing down repeatedly. You can also hear a "salt shaker" sound. Any ideas what it might be?It is a Phillips DROM5016L. Thanks in advance.

It sounds like it dead or in need the lens is in need of a clean.

Ran a lens cleaning CD but made no difference. Got onto Iqon technical support(€1.75 per minute!) and they suggested getting a firmware update but there apparently isn't one for the Phillips DROM5016L. The drive seems to rev up and then slow down, plus salt shaker sound effects, repeatedly for about two minutes and then gives up the ghost. Although this drive is about 15 months old it is virtually unused as the RW drive is above it and more accessible. Iqon also said that there could be a loose cable but under properties it says the device is working properly. Could a cable still have come undone? Any other ideas?

If its under System Devices or My Computer then its normally installed ok i think, unfortunately when the lens goes dead theres no indication of what happened except that it wont read cds anymore :(

Checked all leads and still not working so it looks like I'll need a new drive. Can I get any make/model? If I got a used one would I need the driver or are drivers built in to Windows XP? How much should I expect to pay?

Hold on I know exactly what it is, it's due to Itunes messing with some registry setting it will be fine just have to find that old thread...

I was googling there but couln't find it just people asking what to do, it happens to a lot of people and it easy to fix, I just forget how, try to google it yourself.

Still not working. Any ideas where to get a cheap replacement? Does it matter about the speed rating of the DVD ROM drive?

I have the same problem with a new dell. haven't done anything about it but it seems to be a Philips problem. Have a look at this:
