If you need to put a film onto a 4.7GB disk - dvdshrink
Otherwise I find Nero 6 fine.

2nd Vote for DVDShrink, does the business with little or no fuss

DVD Shrink or Nero Recode (they are both made by the same guy) however you would need to use a CSS removal tool to use Recode like DVD Decrypter or DVDFab Decrypter as DVD Shrink has it's own built in one.

I use CloneDVD to copy and AnyDVD to remove the region coding.

I use DVD Shrink and AnyDVD to make it regionless.

With newer films I try to back-up DVD Shrink but it does get rid of the most of the resent encryption. Does anyone know how to do this?

Sorry to jump into this thread, but didn't want to go and create another thread that is similar to this.

I am using dvd shrink to backup one of my movies and I have been hit with this error:

dvdshrink encountered an error an cannot continue
    Failed to read file "D:\"
    Incorrect function

Anyone have an idea of what the problem is and how to fix it - or am I doing something wrong?

    Maxwell,
    Is D: your DVD drive?

And is your DVD drive identified as D:

Also just check that you can see the DVD disk in 'My Computer'

If above is correct I would reinstall.

    Hi Tommy,

Yes my DVD drive is D and I can see it and access files when going through "my computer"

I have tried backing up/burning the DVD using Clone DVD2 and It won't let me do it because the disk is copyright protected - is this why dvdshrink won't rip it for me?

edit: I have actually re-installed dvdsrhrink a couple of times aswell and still no joy?

    Maxwell,

Note: DVD shrink will not decode the latest encryption.

Is the disk a new release?
If so try an older DVD disk.

If you are still having problems install DVD decryptor and AnyDVD.

Even if DVD shrink can not decode the disk it should still see it is there, its a bit unusual.

Maxwell DVD Shrink is no longer actively developed (the author was hired by Nero) so its CSS stripper can fail to remove the protection from discs that use methods designed to thwart some CSS strippers.

Simple answer is use AnyDVD or DVDFab Decrypter (DVD Decrypter not to be confused with DVDFab Decrypter is also another program no longer actively developed so it falls foul with of some these discs as well).

CloneDVD is great too for altering & removing individual menus something Shrink cant do.

    Yes, its a new release.

Will try DVD decryptor and anydvd

    Thanks for your help

    Max,
Also try a older DVD to to check the Shrink is working for you.

Shrink still works most of the older disks.

Could also be a problem with the new ARccOS™ protected DVDs, mostly from Sony I think.
http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=56831 has more details on plugins for DVD decrypter to get around the problem.

I have Layer Cake on DVD and that seems to have this encryption. I couldn't make an Xvid copy of it for my Archos AV700 mpeg4 video player. I've also seen it on the Kung Fu Hustle DVD.

Use AnyDVD to remove the protections on the fly and any number of one click solutions mentioed already. AnyDVD is updated usually as a new protections are found so I find it quite good.

I allways use DVD decrypter and then DVD shrink.

Keeps the menus intact and perfect quality.

I have a guide from the old DVD decrypter forum from before it shut down, if anyone wants it.

Oh and DVD decrypter can burn ISOs and rip DVD for PSP

Tell me this thread isn't about cloning copyrighted material...

Pulls up cosy chair and waits. 34 mins to beat. :D

I use WinAVi DVD copy, find it a lot faster than DVD shrink and offers a greater range of compression; DVD srink was having problems getting some DVD9s to scale down onto a RW, so I got this instead. It'll copy on the fly, pretty reliably (only had one fail so far and it was cheap media, so I can't blame the s/w). Does a standard movie in about 30-40 minutes (depends on your cpu)

    http://www.winavi.com/en/dvd-copy/dvd-copy.htm

Downside is the registration fee. $35
