Does the battery just give up after a certain length of time(or amount of usage.)Is there any warning that it's running out. What can be done to save what's on it?

Like any lithium battery... it can do, yes.
Is there any warning that it's running out.

Apart from the battery indicator (which just tells you if the charge is low on it), no there's nothing to warn you if it's about to die permanently.

Er... all your music on your iPod should be mirrored on iTunes on your computer.

If your battery DOES die, try these guys: http://www.mactivate.ie/ipodbattery.html

it starts to run out quicker and quicker. You will never loose everything as you can always use it plugged into the mains.
You can buy replacment batteries, far better quality than the original crap ion battery they put in. The replacements last usually 33-50% longer per charge, and since they are lithium polymer they last a good 10 years at least.
Changing them is very tricky if you are not used to electronics. I have thought about doing it as a business, charging maybe €50-60 including the battery. apple charge far more and put the same crappy one in that will run out in 2 years again.

It is best to recharge when 20% if left on the bars
