Is it a PS/2 mouse or a USB one? If it's PS/2, have you checked that all the pins in the plug are ok? (none bent?)

Have you tried removing the mouse in Device Manager and letting the computer re-detect it? Have you tried a different mouse?

Another couple of things for your checklist...

did this mysteriously start happening immediately after you installed a specific piece of software?

did you spill a pint on your mouse on St. Patrick's day?

No to both of those! :) .its wierd it just stopped happening now but i didnt do anything at all to it.

Ah so it's OK now? Good!

I think its a driver problem.

Recently bought a new mouse to replace an Optical mouse which was giving similar problems(jumping to corners).

New (optical) mouse connected to original computer and all is fine.
Old (optical) mouse was them moved to another computer and all is fine.

Annoying and I would love to know what the problem is as I know of others with similar problems with their mice also!

Had the same problem with a mouse on one of my desktops, turned out the mouse had optical movement sensors inside to track the movement even though it used a ball to move cogged wheels that broke the beams, light from desk lamp or ambient light was getting in through cracks / opening in the case and causing the mouse to move by lighting the sensors.

My advice - go to Maplin and get a roller ball mouse they're ridiculously cheap and they work great.

I was having constant problems with a succession of optical mice, in addition to it going into corners, the mice would also cease up and stop function for a couple of seconds at a time at random intervals. So I went looking for a rollerball, found it in Maplin about 2 months ago, and I haven't looked back since. I'd absoluetly and totally reccomend in the strongest possible terms to anyone having problems with optical mice, and I do a lot of Multiplayer FPS so the optical troubles were really annoying.

All you have to do with rollerballs is keep them clean and they'll always work flawlessly.

I actually did get a rollerball mouse as trying to shhot someone online and you end up looking at the sky wasn't on. Far better for it now. Optical mice are fine and dany for office type stuff but for games not worth a crap.

Seemed that you missed my point that the mouse was a roller ball one just with optical pickup inside. Came with the computer, never seen that type of config before or since, anyhow I switched it to another desktop and problem solved. Mystery, complete mystery as to why that solved it. BTW it a ps/2 connection.
