    okay got a
    600mhz atholon
    slot A ami motherboard
    MS Xp sp2

and trying to get this damn gigabyte radeon 9250 to work

    anyone any ideas

what happens is when I try to install the drivers everything looks grand..

Using the windows installer (you know windows has found new hardware blah de blah) It detects the video thingy asks to install I click yeh sure fine go ahead, in installs screen goes black then comes back great. Then it detects vga compatable thingy asks to install I click yeh sure fine, it goes away and installs then screen goes black and pc is non respsonsive.

Or I tell windows no, tried install catalyst drivers, drivers from gigabyte website, omega drivers.. They install grand but when pc restarts it freezes during that xp boot screen with the blue progress bar thing.
So I am kinda at my wits end here.

I tried using driver cleaner pro to clean up the drivers, it found a load of old 3dfx ones that I was hoping were causing te trouble but after I got rid of them the problem was still the same. I got the ati own brand driver uninstall thing but that didn't seem to make any difference either.

    So anyone any helpfull suggestions?

What sort of chipset is it I would assume it's an AMD one given it is a first generation Athlon. Those boards had slighlty iffy AGP ports which could cause problems though a driver update and possible motherboard bios update "might" resolve it.

AMD's AGP driver can be found here.

If you do have an AMD chipset I would install the AGP driver and then try ATI's official drivers again but install the driver only dont install the control panel (yet) the driver only package can be found under the low speed dial up section. If the driver does install and you get to the desktop you can use ATI's Tray Tools a third party program with a much neater interface to the graphics card without having to install the ATI control panel.

    thanx for the quick reply
the motherboard is a FIC SD11 link to bios there.. think that it could be the problem as one of the changes listed there says Fix system hang up when use ATI range 128 pro

    http://www.fic.com.tw/support/motherboard/bios.aspx?model_id=9

so updated it and then it goes and says boot record from ide ok
    and then hangs there

Firstly one has to ask what an earth you are wasting the likes of a 9250 on a 600mhz machine for!

    Yup the FIC SD11 uses an AMD 751 northbridge chip so try the AGP driver though you could have a problem in that it wont work at all, as I checked the SD11 FAQ and found this;
Q19: When I use S3 Savage 4 Pro with the SD11 mainboard the display card gets hot very quickly and then the system crashes. I can use windows and run other programs but after a while the system crashes. What can I do? Is there any solution for using S3 Savage4 Pro with the SD11 Mainboard and AMD-K7-650?

A: AGP devices with 32MB on board should not be used with the SD11 since they draw more current than the motherboard can handle. The SD11 was designed for AGP 1.0 spec (2A 3.3V) but most AGP devices with 32MB on board are compliant with AGP 2.0 spec (6A , 3.3V). The S3 Savage 4 Pro, ASUS V6800, TNT2 Ultra and GeForce 256 all fail to work with the SD11.

Now the 9250 isnt anything special it is a basic graphics card & the above issue may or may not affect it but it doesnt sound good. However they do mention in an older bios update a fix for TNT 2 Ultra boot failure.

How much did it cost? You could have easily picked up a 32mb card - which is totally adequate for a 600mhz machine - for about a tenner here on boards.

A 9250 in a 600mhz is really an absolute waste entirely unless you got it for free or very close :D

I imagine that it's only used for word processing or surfing? You might have even got a 4mb card - which would do all those things grand - for free here :D

I had picked up a free one before but it broke after a few months so I wanted to have something that I thought would work.. and now I have run into a whole set of other problems. So are you offering help or just useless banter?

and no not just word processing and surfing, also dvds, morrowind, Project entropia (which amazingly runs on it although with graphics turned down to nothing) and programming

I just think its a shame to spend your money excessively when you could have got something else cheaper that would do the job just as well. That's all. Although I understand when in a rush sometimes these things can't be helped. :)

So it seems that the bios update may fix the agp problem but when I update it, it give out about my hd.. apparently it doesn't support larger harddrives.. which is strange coz the previous version although it thought it was smaller managed fine ... *sigh*
thinking may just fork out for an upgrade.. way too many problems with it really.. seem to be fixing it every other month

Download Drivercleaner, run it in safe mode, check Add/Remove Programs for anything mentioning ATI and remove it. Set the system to VGA the first time it boots, load the correct monitor driver. Reinstall your ATI drivers.

em I said I did all that in my first post

and if you had read down further you would have seen that the problem was actually with the motherboard not supporting the card.. which kinda suck I really should have seen that before I bought it.. ah well cant go back in time
