Holes in Ceiling from Sparky

Hey all, I had an electrician round who had to put decent size holes in the ceiling, and as I've been getting a bit of confidence with the plastering told him I'd have no bother fixing them!
Whats the standard way to patch up these holes after a job. I only know 2 ways. 1, cut rectangular and offer up a bigger piece of plasterboard than the hole through the hole and hold tight with string while plastering over, then cut string. or 2, cut the plasterboard the length of the joist spacing and replace then replaster.
Any quicker ways when youve a few to do!:D
